G'day Listers and Mark B inparticular,
I've no idea whether what you've suggested will work Mark but it sounds like
good stuff to me and I've sent it on to the Avionics guy currently
scratching his head over this deal. I certainly appreciate your input. From
what I understand the fuse is blowing as soon as the battery is turned on
even without the generator running and with most other circuits
disconnected. Logic dictates this can't be as hard a problem as it seems but
that's why electrics is regarded as a dark science I guess.
Sometimes this list throws up some gems.

Keith, not meaning to disagree but, just to add to what you said.---
A Transorb is usually designed to protect against very short duration volta
ge spikes.- They are great for EMP type lightning pulse surges and also i
nductive field kicks.- Nothing wrong with putting them in an airplane, ot
her than the fact that they can act as a fuse when their ratings are exceed
ed and simply blow up.- Of course putting a real- fuse in series (like
you suggested) will help prevent that. -Voltage Regulator over-voltage fa
ilures are usually not transient, but instead sustained.- Typically the e
asy way to protect from voltage regulator failure is with some type of crow
bar circuit where when an over-voltage (sustained) condition occurs (over a
certain "set" voltage), a short circuit occurs that then blows a circuit b
reaker, which then opens a relay, which then totally disconnects the power
generation source from the aircraft mains.- The small B&C Alternator offe
rs
a kit that does exactly that.- The bigger B&C has that design protection
built right into their voltage regulator itself.- (Good product!)- =0A
=0ABeing the cheap SOB that I am, I have stayed with the original generator
design because all those folks that are switching to alternators make the
price for spare parts pretty darn cheap.- I can usually find a used gener
ator for about $100.- Compare that to getting a new alternator for exampl
e.- Just my 2 cents.- =0A=0AMark Bitterlich=0A=0A=0A=0A=0A_____________

g,=0A=0AI agree that the alternator would provide a more stable power sourc
e but it is not immune from overvoltage (most likely from a faulty VR). A T
ransorb surge protector and a fuse would be a nice backup.=0A=0AKeith=0A=0A

Thank you Graeme.- Just as an aside... reverse current will occur even wi
th the generator running.- It must be over 40%- engine RPM (or more)-
to spin it fast enough to stop this.- If the reverse current protection
relay was stuck closed, it should blow as soon as electrical MAIN power is
turned on.- If the reverse current relay is opening slowly... it could al
so happen at idle.- Bottom line, pull the wires of the generator complete
ly. ALL of them.- Then test it.- =0A=0AAlso, before much longer.. use t
he light bulb current limiter trick- in place of the fuse so that wiring
does not go up in smoke.- 50 amps or more is a significant current draw.
- That's the same as 1.4 KW and that is a LOT of heat.- =0A=0ABest of l
