Subject: | Re: Tax Time - What can I write off |
I'm not a tax pro, but I have been doing corporate and personal taxes for quite
some time.
Since the airplane is experimental and not eligible for hire, your LLC has to be
a not for profit or a charitable organization of some sort (501c3). You could
also form a foundation, but there are more specialized rules there.
Being a member of Red Stars (a 501c3), and participating in a sponsored event might
qualify as a charitable donation like any other charitable donation. The
sponsored event will have to be directly related to the mission of the Red Star
501c3 qualification.
You will be careful to log how each and every expense (fuel (or hourly operating
cost if you establish a basis), fees, lodging, food) is related to participation
or preparation for participation. You will have a real hard time claiming
(except as part of an hourly expense basis) annuals, flight currency, insurance
or repair items prior to the event. Anything you receive as compensation
as result of participation like admission, fuel, food, lodging, etc. reduces the
basis for your deduction.
Let me know if you learn something different from this.

The following comment is offered as an anecdotal experience and in no way guarantees
future results.
I've been using mogas adding lead substitute for my Nanchang from Wal-Mart for
eight years now along with MMO from the same source. Most cylinders are still
pulling 80/78 with a low of 80/74.

I have a source for watches styled for the PLA. Pricing would be $25-$50 each.
If there enough people interested, I will start ordering five or six styles.
They are analog with stainless steel cases and bands.
Let me know.

Just for everyones information we cut Housai and M14P valve seats all the
time, they are not hardened valve seats, just the opposite, they are easy to
cut and it takes no special tools that any master mechanic would not have or
be able to use. They are three angle cuts and I suspect they are bronze or
similar material.
Anyone who says they needed to dress the stone three times on those seats
needs new stones!
We also have been running auto fuel (87oct) for six years now (200hrs per
year) with no problems whatsoever. I suspect most peoples problems arrise
from not correctly adjusting the valves out of laziness or not knowing how.

Graeme, with respect, this is a subject that I feel is unwise to dismiss
based on what your friend said when he ground the valve seats in your
engine.
1. Unless those seats were made to the exact same specs, you also can
not be sure of anything that applies to an engine made in another
country, I.E. a Housai compared to an M-14.
2. Not only is the hardness of the seat material massively different at
grinding temperatures as compared to combustion temperatures, but the
valve material (as well as the valve seats) comes into play.
Valve seats are a science unto themselves. For an interesting discourse
on the subject, read this:
http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/7216427/description.html
Bottom line. If you want to run 100% unleaded fuel in these engines for
a long period of time with no additives, and not be concerned about it
at all, that is clearly your choice.
Personally, I tend to side with every technical article written on the
subject.

Guys I am sure this will apply to the Russian engine as well. About 5
years ago I had cause to have some valves reground on my Housai engine.
A guy who builds race engines made some tooling and cut the seats for
me. He said they were the hardest valve seats he had ever seen and had
to dress the stone three times per angle he cut in the seat. I figure
your lower or no lead fuel will work fine in these engines though your

Good idea using the lead substitute.
Having good compression is a good sign. Using a borescope to inspect
them is also worth thinking about.
Have you been using NOTHING BUT MO-GAS... Or on some cross countries
(for example) you put some 100LL in because nothing else was available?
