If you have any sense of self preservation,DO NOT just bolt on a new
prop and fly the Yak !!
An estimate of $6600 is indicative of a serious ground-strike,and the
engine could well be damaged.
At its very least, you should remove the gearbox, and send it to be
stripped and crack -tested,and at the same time check the run-out on the
end of the crank-it should not be more than 0.03mm.
We had a UK Sukhoi, where the owner just replaced the prop after a
strike, and went on flying.About 3 hours later, when he was taxiing in
from an aerobatic sequence, the engine locked solid-a satelite gear in
the gearbox had broken up and jammed the whole gearbox.
Even at idle,it broke the engine mount,a couple of instruments etc.Had
it been 5 minutes before the engine would certainly have come out in
flight.

Hello,
Well just cleaned out the bank buying a yak 55m with a prop
strike(only 24 yrs old).It has a 3 blade whirlwind and they
want 6600 to fix it.Does anyone have a old 2 blade laying
around? I could rent or buy? to ferry the plane home. I have
3000+hrs and 500+ in pitts so it will be safe if i can just
rent one to get it home. Also in need of a Engine mount leg
if anyone has one laying around.
Thanks,

Chris,
Richard is absolutely correct. The fact that you need an engine mount leg
tells me that engine took a hit in a worst kind of way. I personally would
not trust it on a ferry flight. Not sure where the mount is broken but
considering it is welded where the arms support and are mounted to the ring.
It is bolted to the fire wall in 4 places. It took some force to break a
mount that is for sure. You have no idea what kind of force in the form of a
rotational moment that was applied to the gears until you tear down the nose
case and check.
Think about it. It is your rosey pink that is going to be sitting behind it
on this ferry flight.

Chris-when you say "the crank" I assume you do not mean the propshaft
flange,as you might do with a Lycoming-that is irelevant with a geared
engine.
Also, you have no way of knowing what damage there might be in the
gearbox, and if the original accident broke an engine mount,it was so
severe that internal damage is a reasonable possibility.
The manufacturer's strict instructions are that ANY ground strike must
then have,at a minimum,a gearbox check.
In the end,it is not only your neck that could be affected,it is also
our insurance premiums and the reputation of these Russian aircraft!!

The reason it's 6600 is that it's an older whirlwind
They will not fix one blade they want to put 3
New blades in

Chris should you get the engine started and it doesn't make manifold 80+ pr
essure at max-throttle and 72 % power, the gear has sheared that turns th
e blower. We flew this aircraft but it never made full power and didn't run
right at full power, had the blower moved probably would have sent the res
t of the gear teeth through the engine.-Just sharing my experience =0A=0A

Chris;
I very seriously suggest that you truck it home. In addition to possible
internal engine damage the broken engine mount is an indicator of possible
airframe damage as well.
