Doc suggestion is a very good choice. If you're looking for JUST a tach, take a look at the Horizon Instruments P-1000 tach. You can order it configured to you needs. Just installed one in a CJ with an M14. Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Kemp M.D. To: yak-list@matronics.com Sent: Sunday, May 10, 2009 10:51 PM Subject: RE: Yak-List: After market Tach <viperdoc@mindspring.com> Look at the Dynon EMS system for one. JPI also has one with a bunch of bells and whistles. It reports as rpm though not as % rpm. I have talked to tech support at Dynon about this. According to them, it is a simple software change but not enough people have asked for it for them feel it might be of benefit. Also check with West London Aeroclub in England. I thought I saw a tach drive generator on their website. But before you press off buying a new generator, have you looked to see if you have a broken wire in the sim plug? That is the most common cause for Tach Drive Generators to fail. The Baklan 5 radio has a circuit breaker (no fuse) on the left hand console. It is the last one in the series of 8 breakers and the one closest to the main air valve. I was first introduced to the Horizon Tach several years ago when I installed an M14P in the "Super Pickle". Since then I have come to know the company pretty well as they have programmed a couple of 337 tachs for the stock Housai for us. It's a great product with super customer support. It is a good diagnostic tool, very readable, and very reliable. The gauges are STC's for other applications. For a stand alone replacement, I'm not aware of a product that comes close. And for about the same money as a tach generator, you get a solid state replacement that is dead nuts simple to wire (off the P-leads at the mag switch). I second that suggestion. I have the Horizon tach in my 52 and have been very pleased with it. a digital indication for mag drop and you can get the indicator lights set for max continuous which provides a good "idiot" light for rpm while flying formation. If you're looking for a small panel mount, there really isn't any reasonably priced/sized transponders. The small Becker/round (fits a 57mm or 2 1/4" hole) is around $1850 US and a very good unit. The Microair is similar and also about the same price. The alternative is to find a standard size, yellow tagged unit that you can mount vertically on the left side console. You may even find a good used one on eBay. West London Aero Club Russian Engineering has them listed on their website if you want to stay orginal. I have a mix in my pane. The Dynon and the steam gauges mixed. In the 50, the AS indicator is perfect for snap shots on final as is the % RPM. For a snap shot, the position of a needle on a dill works better for me than tapes and digital printouts. Now if I had the bucks to project the info on Beveled Glass on the windscreen AKA HUD, well then the steam gauges would be gone.
