Unless the airspeed indicator in the helicopter is connected to something in addition to the pitot system (ie: normally a single line connected to the rear of the airspeed indicator), you should be able to replace it with and it will simply work. Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: Jon Boede To: yak-list@matronics.com Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:19 PM Subject: Yak-List: airspeed indicators In the Mi-2 helicopters we are restoring the airspeed indicators go to 500 km/hr even though Vne is something more like 200 km/hr. My friend said this was like his old car that had a speedometer that went to 160 even though the car was scary at 80 mph. :-) The short question is if we replace these with airspeed indicators that go to maybe 120 knots (apparently helicopter pilots can only think in knots), will they simply work, or are airspeed indicators matched to the air system in an aircraft? Obviously the other choice is to simply reface them, but everybody agrees that an airspeed that goes to less than half the gauge for Vne seems like a waste of a lot of dial space. Jon

I'm almost positive you can go with any airspeed indicator. The ASI measures pressure and is simply calibrated to indicate whatever pressure it sees. In my Yak-50 is an ASI that measures all the way out to 1100 km/h (or something ridiculous for a Yak). It is from a a MiG. It works just fine. How long 'til the helicopter flies?? First Mi-2 helicopter has its airworthiness=2C has flown off phase I=2C and goes to its first airshow this weekend! Both Mi-24s have had all but 4 (2 each) of their *60* hoses (fuel=2C oil=2C hydraulic=2C whatnot) replaced (all braided stainless "forever" hoses -- p rice = ouch). Waiting on the 4 hoses and then a little weight and balanc e jigging (or! anybody just happen to have a mock-up of the quad 12.7mm Yak -B Gatling gun?) and it's off to the races with the FAA. Unfortunately the only date we have on the hoses is "soon". :-) Jon > Date: Wed=2C 17 Jun 2009 06:57:05 -0700 > Subject: Yak-List: Re: airspeed indicators > From: bhancock@worldwidewarbirds.com > To: Yak-list@matronics.com > ds.com> > > Jon > > >Obviously the other choice is to simply reface them=2C but everybody a grees > >that an airspeed that goes to less than half the gauge for Vne seems lik e > >a waste of a lot of dial space. > > I'm almost positive you can go with any airspeed indicator. Just installed mine and offer the following: De-soldering the fine screen is no problem but don't get too aggressive as various sections of support framing for the larger screen underneath can come loose as well. I noticed only a very small decrease in manifold pressure of about 10mm if at all -------- Keith McKinley 700 HS KFIT Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=248836#248836
