Subject: | Re: Blue Mountain Updates |
The support I have received from BMA has been great. Now that they are shut down
for new production and the staff is Greg and one office person, there may be
delays in getting help (don't expect a same day response or some times same
week response to an inquiry).
Greg and I have been working on some engine monitoring issues for the past two
months. While they are not producing new units, it is still possible to get
an older one repaired. My engine pod (I use their engine monitoring) which is
basically a board full of analog to digital converters, has just been reworked,
tested at BMA and is being returned.
As for the Jepp issue, I inquired to Greg about it and he responded last night
that he is actively working on the issue. If he gets the issue resolved with
Jepp or not is another matter. For it only being one guy trying to keep users
going, he is not doing too bad a job from my experience.
This is not meant to start a BMA discussion here. It is meant to give you some
hope if you own BMA. There are other BMA users who are actively looking into
buying the software and charging for updates, etc to continue to upgrade the
software. If the units hardware can be repaired and the software and databases
be upgraded, there is no need to change for many years. Bottom line is don't
panic as things are still evolving.
Please don't start a post back that Greg promised this and that and never delivered
- old news and water over the dam. All I can tell you is what he has done
for me regarding support and what he tells me he is working on.

Keith,
My experience has been:
1. Lots of pumps will work equally well. But get a pump with a replaceable
impeller/diaphragm. You WILL end up replacing it someday.
2. You only need one injector to make good smoke. Photos/personal
observations show no difference from my one injector vs others with two.
3. Put the one injector on the left side (under your left foot when you sit
in plane). You will get much less smoke in cockpit. Right side smoke blows
up over the wing and gets into the cockpit more. Left side seems to keep to
the belly, and thus exits out the back better.
4. Buy an injector from Smoking Airplanes (homemade ones do NOT work as
well).
5. Put the injector just above the "Y" in the left side exhaust. Putting
it higher on the exhaust pipe justs gets more smoke in the cockpit (as it
leaks out every joint). (Imagine how much CO we must be breathing!)
6. Adjust the flow to .6 - .7 gal/min for best smoke (and little oil on
belly).
Have fun,
Steve Dalton

Gang,
We have installed several SA kits for customers in CJ's and even an L-39 with no
reported problems. I have had it in the Yak-50 for 3 years without any issues
and it routinely sees 6+ G's. It makes very good smoke. With our fabrication
capabilities it would not be difficult to build them from scratch, but unless
you need an airshow size tank (larger than 5 gallons), it's just not cost
effective for us to fabricate them. John is great with customer support and the
installation is straight forward. Smoking Airplanes is the way to go.
Barry
P.S. Take Pappy's advice and put the injectors at least mid way down the stack.
Additionlly, the right amount of oil under the right pressure (at least 40
psi) and a good injector make all the difference in how clean the burn is.

Guys...for comparison's sake.....
The lead aircraft is me in the -50 with a single injector. The smoker on the left
is a custom system with 2 injectors (a tad more dense), the one on the right
is custom single injector. Custom systems run about 2x the SA system...

I'll agree the SA system is complete and probably easy and simple to install. No
doubt the one stop customer service is a bonus as well, but I respectfully disagree
on the above statement. I can get a custom aluminum tank (5 gal) with
4 flanges and all the fittings for mounting a pump, vent, level sending unit,
as well as filler neck, etc for 300 bucks. The tank will be sized to fit exactly
where I need it. The pump SA uses is readily available for around a 100 bucks
so that leaves a nozzle, regulator valve, some hose , AN fittings and a switch.
I'm sure those items will be under 475 bucks.
Not sure what I'll do but that's why I started the thread. No doubt SA is well
respected for their gear.

Steve,
You may try repairing the cracked rubber with a high temp silicone/RTV
sealant. If you want to smooth out the sealant, try dipping your finger
into light weight oil and rub your finger over the lumps to smooth it
out. Keep your finger wet with the oil though or you'll still have
lumps.

Subject: Yak-List: M-14P chip detector
Hey Y'all,
The rubber material encasing the triangular shaped mounting surface of
my M-14P oil sump chip detector is falling apart. It is not completely
insulating the unit when attached.
As a result, I get a chip detector light on when at low power
settings, i.e. less than cruise power. (There's another question: why
only at lower power settings?)
Note: It is an electrical/insulation issue, not a chip issue, the unit
is clean as a whistle...no debris in it at all. I also have an ADC
filter screen with a chip light (also clean as a whistle.)
Question: Is there some way to repair the rubber insulation on this
thing, or am I forced to just buy a new one...and can one buy one...from
whom?
Thanks,
Steve Dalton

Keith, if you can do it for that...go for it! The "custom" systems I'm talking
about are those installed by other shops. Complexity and quality always play
a role...
