Steve, In the power generating business, we use Glyptal as a spray or brush-on insulator for generator rotors, stators, busbars, and motor windings.? It is oil, grease and temperature resistant.? The product is a bit pricey, but it does work well.? If you cannot find it locally, it is available from The Eastwood Company (www.eastwood.com) as Item # 46001 ZP for brush-on or 4600 Z for the spray.? Several coats will be needed to build up the thickness, but I think this will work.? Insulating washers under the nuts would help prevent scratching through the coating on installation. A more readily available alternative might be Krylon 1385 Red Insulating Varnish, but I can't vouch for its durability. Hope this helps. Rich Desmond -----Original Message----- From: Mozam <sdalton@hughes.net> Sent: Thu, Oct 8, 2009 10:02 pm Subject: Yak-List: M-14P chip detector Hey Y'all, The rubber material encasing the triangular shaped mounting surface of my M-14P oil sump chip detector is falling apart. It is not completely insulating the unit when attached. As a result, I get a chip detector light on when at low power settings, i.e. less than cruise power. (There's another question: why only at lower power settings?) Note: It is an electrical/insulation issue, not a chip issue, the unit is clean as a whistle...no debris in it at all. I also have an ADC filter screen with a chip light (also clean as a whistle.) Question: Is there some way to repair the rubber insulation on this thing, or am I forced to just buy a new one...and can one buy one...from whom? Thanks, Steve Dalton Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=267170#267170

If you like the idea of the Horizon tach, but don't like the price (it is TSOed) or the fact that it only fits a 3 1/8 hole....the new tach from Flight Data Systems might be your answer. http://www.fdatasystems.com/T_30.htm I contacted the company and asked if it would work on a 9-cyl radial. They have a person with a Wilga testing it now and he told me they are committed to making a model that will work for radials. At $169, this is a nice replacement for the tachs in our planes and it fits the existing hole. Craig W. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=267370#267370

Thanks for that post Craig. I really like their G-meter (thanks again!) the display is large and really easy to read. The tach looks like a great deal. -------- Keith McKinley 700HS KFIT Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=267393#267393

Hey Hoser, I'm no expert but I flew all last winter in some mighty cold weather (well below freezing). Flew briefly in a few small snow squalls as well. Of course at those low temps the air is pretty dry, plus I gotta think the air coming out of the compressor is pretty warm. My biggest problem was getting the oil to warm up. I now have heaters on the sump, tank, and cooler. I still need some sort of baffle in the cooler inlet. I had no issues with my air system except at one point the right main stut got a little mushy. Keep the rpm below 1200 or so until the oil is up to temp. Oh, and God help whoever is in the rear cockpit. I bring a small blanket to stuff around the air leaks. Come on down this winter and we'll go to Lake Winnipesaukee and land on the ice runway. I saw a looses screw on one the tail fairing today. When I tried to tighten it, it acted like it was crossed treaded. So I removed it and decided to run a tap down though it. I had purchased a 4mm tap just for this type of thing. However as I was running the tap though, it snapped off. Nuts!!!! I ended up removing both tail fairing's so as to get the tap out of the nut plate. That done, I did a little inspection of the tail section and found that the cable for the elevator trim is about to break. So has anyone out there done this before and not ended up committing suicide? Jim "Pappy" Goolsby

Batman had us replace this fine wire and "No we did not commit suicide but laying upside that long to respool the trim wheel is an unforgetable experi ence". Third time was a charm.
