    Subject: Nanchang Air Gremlins
    From: Byron Fox <byronmfox@gmail.com>
Happy Halloween! Recently, partner Brian and I heard a hissing sound coming from our front seat gear handle/valve. Oh well, order a new from Doug Sapp. It arrived and we installed it on Thursday. We recharged the system, and damn, the same hissing was escaping the valve! What the devil was going on? Well, Brian quickly discovered that the air was coming from the two small ports on the bottom of the valve. You know, those ones through which air erupts when you raise or lower the gear. Hmmm. What's the likelihood of having two bad gear valves? Not very likely. So, we called Doug. He pondered for a moment and then suggested that we check each of our gear actuators to determine if downside air was bleeding by one of the actuator rams and migrating along the upside air line back to the valve. Good idea. Did that by successively capping off each actuator. And guess what? All three were sound, and that bloody air poltergeist was still hissing merrily away. Notice how the amateur mechanic will tend to animate troublesome inanimate objects. OK, after I had regained my equanimity, I sat down to study our enlarged, plastic laminated, CJ pneumatic system diagram. (A thoughtful gift from Dave King) Soon, it became clear that the front seat gear valve gets its air from the controlling back seat valve, where the instructor would sit. Makes sense. It was time to experiment. Up on jacks, I put the front seat gear handle in the neutral position and the back seat handle down. Same hissing but now from the back gear valve. Gear up, the hissing all but disappears. One more bit of information - the back seat gear handle was extraordinarily stiff and hard to move most likely because it gets cycled once a year during the annual inspection. My conclusion is that the gremlin lives in the back seat gear valve. For all I know, it's probably been in the airplane since 1968 and has corroded accounting for its stiffness. So, a new one is on its way, and we'll see if I'm right. In the mean time, do any of you vastly more experience folks have any other ideas? Many thanks, Blitz Byron M. Subject: strange behavior of braking system
    From: "tigeryak18t" <didier.blouzard@gmail.com>
Hello to all, first of all I must tell you that I had a very good day together with my friend Christophe Bourillon owner of a superb YAK18T (see the picture attached). As you can see the weather in Normandy France, was.....not very good today but we, yakees, use to fly nearly anytime...that's a joke of course. If you read this Christophe thanks for this very nice day. My question is regarding the 52 braking system. Sometime, with not any particular reason, when I try to brake after landing and during taxying, I pull the brake and nothing happen. I can hear the hiss of air but no braking (or very inneficient) then after pumping a few time braking comes back. I was wondering if this could have any link with the Brake Reduction Valve or anything else?? Has anyone experimented such behavior? Thanks for your help Didier 18T HA-JAC 52 RA1006K -------- Didier Tiger YAK18T Member of Commemorative Air Force French Wing Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=270265#270265 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/img_0753_123.jpg

Hello again these questions will probably find an answer with Deniss, but any help is very welcome. 1)I am looking for the "carburator diaphragm". Where can I find one or two and is it a part difficult to replace? 2)Do you know if it is possible to add a Tee for inflating both the main system and the emergency system? (I saw that in a 52) 3)Deniss I forgot to whom shall I ask for the prop seal kit??? could you please have the kindness to tell me who?? 4)I have fluctuations in my gauges indications. It seems that it could come from the floatters. Do you know if it is possible ti find these foam floatters or to repair it or to find the gauges (picture are attached) Thanks so much to all for any hints and tips. Kind regards Didier HA-JAC RA 1006K -------- Didier Tiger YAK18T Member of Commemorative Air Force French Wing Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=270268#270268 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/img_0938_831.jpg

Just arrived at Provo with this bird on the way to deliver it to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Was walking away from the plane after a 3:45 flight when I noticed the fleeting sunset... For you CJ officionados this first pic really highlights our exclusive one piece rear canopy... DSC_0067 Plane runs terrific and is squawk free. After recreating the Chinese military demo team scheme and all the detail/mod work, I hate to see it go. But at least it will have a visible home and keep flying! Will be pressing on to Hamilton, Ontario starting Monday. I'm trying to update the blog as we go.... http://worldwidewarbirds.blogspot.com/ Barry Hancock Worldwide Warbirds, Inc. www.worldwidewarbirds.com (909) 606-4444 office (949) 300-5510 cell "The complete center for warbird excellence" Express Mailing address: 7000 Merrill Ave, B-110, Unit J Chino, CA 91710 Regular Mailing address: 7000 Merrill Ave., Box 91 Chino, CA 91710 The information contained in this e-mail message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipients. Didier, A couple of Answers. West London Aero Club has the diaphragms, air refill adapter, and prop seal kits. The URL is http://www.wlacrussianeng.co.uk As for your brake issues, is this occurring after hard braking or a long taxi with frequent application of the brakes. If so you are experiencing brake fade due to the drums/shoes heating up. You can also have a felt seal on the wheel bearing leaking grease into the drum causing brake failure. Glazed brake pads will cause weak braking also. Brakes pulling to one side and being weak can mean grease on the shoes, glazed shoes, and leaking brake line off the top of my head.
