Subject: PLEASE READ - Matronics Email List Fund Raiser During November!
Dear Listers, Each November I hold a PBS-like fund raiser to support the continued operation and upgrade of the List services at Matronics. It's solely through the Contributions of List members that these Matronics Lists are possible. There is NO advertising to support the Lists. You might have noticed the conspicuous lack of flashing banners and annoying pop-ups on the Matronics Email List email messages and web site pages such as the Matronics List Forums ( http://forums.matronics.com ), the List Wiki ( http://wiki.matronics.com), or other related pages such as the List Search Engine ( http://www.matronics.com/search ), the List Browser ( http://www.matronics.com/listbrowse ), etc. This is because I believe in a List experience that is completely about the sport we all enjoy - namely Airplanes and not about annoying advertisements. During the month of November I will be sending out List messages every couple of days reminding everyone that the Fund Raiser is underway. I ask for your patience and understanding during the Fund Raiser and throughout these regular messages. The Fund Raiser is only financial support mechanism I have to pay all of the bills associated with running these lists. Your personal Contribution counts! Once again, this year I've got a terrific line up of free gifts to go along with the various Contribution levels. Most all of these gifts have been provided by some of the vary members and vendors that you'll find on Matronics Lists and have been either donated or provided at substantially discounted rates. This year, these generous people include Bob Nuckolls of the AeroElectric Connection (http://www.aeroelectric.com/), Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore (http://www.buildersbooks.com/), and Jon Croke of HomebuiltHELP (http://www.homebuilthelp.com/). These are extremely generous guys and I encourage you to visit their respective web sites. Each one offers a unique and very useful aviation-related product line. I would like publicly to thank Bob, Andy, and Jon for their generous support of the Lists again this year!! You can make your List Contribution using any one of three secure methods this year including using a credit card, PayPal, or by personal check. All three methods afford you the opportunity to select one of this year's free gifts with a qualifying Contribution amount!! To make your Contribution, please visit the secure site below: http://www.matronics.com/contribution I would like to thank everyone in advance for their generous financial AND moral support over the years! Didier, It could be one of maybe 4 things: 1. You are not getting the proper amount of air volume or pressure out of the QS-1valve, in "CJ speak" this is the valve which reduces the amount of air pressure and sends it on to the QS2 which is responsible for breaking, both differential and straight ahead. 2. The QS2 has bad seals or is full of corrosion. Again, QS-1 and QS-2 are CJ6 P/N's, but I am pretty sire that the inner workings all utilize the same parts. 3. Your brake pads or drums are very badly worn. (again same as CJ6) 4. You have a leak in BOTH of your brake bladders, which is highly unlikely. (also same as CJ6) Unless you have recently replaced/overhauled this portion of your air system my guess would be that your QS-1 and QS-2 valves are in need of replacement or overhaul. Knowing that the 52 does not have a water filter in the air system I suspect that you will find that the internal parts are pretty nasty. I carry both the QS-1 and QS-2 overhaul kits as well as the water filter mod in inventory, please contact me off list to order. I have the factory (tubular aluminum) towbar. I can take some pictures if you like. It's awfully long, however. I also had a small, collapsable hand towbar with my last yak-52. It was non-original, but very clever. It was essentially a yoke with two tube segments that were positioned on either side of the nosewheel axle. The I.D. of these tubes was the same as the I.D. of the nosewheel axle (where your hand towbar is inserted). There was then an internal tube that slid through one tube, the axle, then the other tube and was secured with pins. Very light, very secure. This version was also collapsable to fit on the back deck. You could probably make one with both handle and pintle type attachments. Maybe I can get a pic of this thing from the guy I sold my previous Yak to. I've wanted to make a similar one since then. -Eric 716.208.5460 On Nov 1, 2009, at 12:22 PM, delfin wrote: > > > I am looking to buy, or make a tow bar for use with a tug for my > YAK-52. Didier, Everything Doc says is of course accurate. However, I would add, based on you description of the problem, consider overhauling the brake reducing valve, since this is where application of the brakes starts after the mechanical pull of the brake handle. Regarding the carburetor diaphragm, WLAC does not have the diaphragms. Mark Jefferies does. Doug Sapp has the prop seals as well as the brake reducing valve overhaul kit. West London Aero Club has the diaphragms, air refill adapter, and prop seal kits. The URL is http://www.wlacrussianeng.co.uk As for your brake issues, is this occurring after hard braking or a long taxi with frequent application of the brakes. If so you are experiencing brake fade due to the drums/shoes heating up. You can also have a felt seal on the wheel bearing leaking grease into the drum causing brake failure. Glazed brake pads will cause weak braking also. Brakes pulling to one side and being weak can mean grease on the shoes, glazed shoes, and leaking brake line off the top of my head. Glad you jumped in on this one Doug. I'm certain Didier should overhaul both the brake reducing valve and the brake differential valve. He also needs prop hub seals as well. Subject: Re: Nanchang Air Gremlins
Byron, This is a very common problem with both the CJ and Yak 52. Rear gear selectors very rarely get used or even cycled during the annual condition inspection. I make it a point to cycle the gear from both the front and the rear gear selectors. I've seen rust and corrosion so bad in a rear gear selector that the tension spring was totally disintegrated and the two metal surfaces that mate inside the unit had pit marks so deep they could never be resurfaced. Everyone should make it a point to cycle the gear from the rear cockpit at least once a year. The alternative is fabricate a by-pass around the rear gear selector which as everyone knows, passes the air pressure from and through the rear gear selector to the front gear selector. Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: Byron Fox To: Yak LIst ; Bay Bombers Sent: Saturday, October 31, 2009 9:09 AM Subject: Yak-List: Nanchang Air Gremlins Happy Halloween! Recently, partner Brian and I heard a hissing sound coming from our front seat gear handle/valve. Oh well, order a new from Doug Sapp. It arrived and we installed it on Thursday. We recharged the system, and damn, the same hissing was escaping the valve! What the devil was going on? Well, Brian quickly discovered that the air was coming from the two small ports on the bottom of the valve. You know, those ones through which air erupts when you raise or lower the gear. Hmmm. What's the likelihood of having two bad gear valves? Not very likely. So, we called Doug. He pondered for a moment and then suggested that we check each of our gear actuators to determine if downside air was bleeding by one of the actuator rams and migrating along the upside air line back to the valve. Good idea. Did that by successively capping off each actuator. And guess what? All three were sound, and that bloody air poltergeist was still hissing merrily away. Notice how the amateur mechanic will tend to animate troublesome inanimate objects. OK, after I had regained my equanimity, I sat down to study our enlarged, plastic laminated, CJ pneumatic system diagram. (A thoughtful gift from Dave King) Soon, it became clear that the front seat gear valve gets its air from the controlling back seat valve, where the instructor would sit. Makes sense. It was time to experiment. Up on jacks, I put the front seat gear handle in the neutral position and the back seat handle down. Same hissing but now from the back gear valve. Gear up, the hissing all but disappears. One more bit of information - the back seat gear handle was extraordinarily stiff and hard to move most likely because it gets cycled once a year during the annual inspection. My conclusion is that the gremlin lives in the back seat gear valve. For all I know, it's probably been in the airplane since 1968 and has corroded accounting for its stiffness. So, a new one is on its way, and we'll see if I'm right. In the mean time, do any of you vastly more experience folks have any other ideas? Many thanks, Blitz Byron M. Beg to differ my friend, WLAC is where I got the diaphragm for the 50 that we (you) put in. They also list prop seals on their website. Not to distract from Doug and Sorry Doug I did not remember that you had the prop seals but I did know you had the brake reducing kits. But, I was not aware you had the entire replacement units. Sorry, my bad. WLAC has the entire units for sell. http://www.wlacrussianeng.co.uk/main.asp?ID=1 <http://www.wlacrussianeng.co.uk/main.asp?ID=1&Manu=&Start 0> &Manu=&Start 0 at the bottom of the page.
