Subject: | November List Fund Raiser |
A couple of years ago I implemented an automatic "squelch button" of sorts for
the Fund Raiser messages. Here's how it works... As soon as a List member makes
a Contribution through the Matronics Fund Raiser web site, he or she will
instantly cease to receive these Fund Raiser messages for the rest of the month!
Its just that simple. Don't you wish PBS worked that way! :-)
I really do appreciate each and every one of your individual Contributions to support
the Lists. It is your support that enables me to upgrade the hardware
and software that are required to run a List Site such as this one. It also goes
to pay for the commercial-grade Internet connection and to pay the huge electric
bill to keep the computer gear running and the air conditioner powered
on. I run all of the Matronics Email List and Forums sites here locally which
allows me to control and monitor every aspect of the system for the utmost in
reliably and performance.
Your personal Contribution matters because, when combined with other Listers such
as yourself, it pays the bills to keep this site up and running. I accept
exactly ZERO advertising dollars for the Matronics Lists sites. I can't stand
the pop-up ads and all other commercials that are so prevalent on the Internet
these days and I particularly don't want to have it on my Email List sites.
If you appreciate the ad-free, grass-roots, down-home feel of the Matronics Email
Lists, please make a Contribution to keep it that way!!

Thank you!

related message. For example, if someone replies to one of the messages,
when using the List Browse feature, or when accessing List message via the Forum.
The system keys on the given email address and since most of these are anonymous
public access methods, there is no simple way to filter them.]

Subject: | Header Tank Leak |
When plane was topped off the other day (first time in two months as plane has
been in shop for some rewiring), there was a strong smell of fuel in the cockpit.
Investigated and the header tank fitting on the right side (where wing tank
line enters header tank) has heavy blue staining on it. Before defueling the
plane to correct, is this a dry fitting, are there seals, any type of sealer
to use? Also, how do I get the blue stain off places where fuel leaked?
Thanks,
Craig

Craig,
Call me before you try to remove the fitting from the header tank. If you
do it incorrectly you will twist the flapper off the valve which is on the
inside of the loose fitting.

Thanks Doug, as always it was good to talk to you. You wanted me to make sure
I did not have the tank upside-down with the flappers hanging open when trying
to retighten the fitting.
I was hoping to not need to remove the header tank at all. I have looked at Book
2, Figure 1-11 and there is no detail of the fitting and flapper valve.
Any other insight about how to tighten/seal this connection would be a big help.
Craig

A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.
The jet jockey decided to show off.
The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, 'watch this!' and promptly
went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished
with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot
asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?
The C-130 pilot said, 'That was impressive, but watch this!'
The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130
pilot came back on and said: 'What did you think of that?'
Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, 'What the heck did you do?'
The C-130 pilot chuckled. 'I stood up, stretched my legs, walked
to the back, went to the bathroom, then got a cup of coffee and a
cinnamon bun.'

Hi Craig;
You can't just "tighten the fitting". The flapper valve hinge must remain
exactly at the top to provide proper operation. There is a mark on one flat
of the nut to indicate the top position.
You will need to remove the valve assy. This is where Doug's caution comes
into play. It may be possible to remove with the tank installed but you
need to turn carefully by hand to determine if the flapper has opened and
hung up. If so you must remove the tank.in order to remove the valve.
Clean up, check operation and re-install with a new gasket a little thicker
than the one you removed. The objective is tight - with the hinge exactly
at the top. Not as easy as it sounds, you may need a variety of gaskets of
varying thickness.
An AN900-29 copper crush washer may do the job. Use Parker Seal-Lube (or
Fuel-Lube) on the threads and the gasket.
I usually make an index mark on the nut opposite to the Chinese mark so that
it is easier to see when tightening.
Good luck
Walt

Russ,
I'm 59 years old entering my last year of military (ANG) service and am
still flying the F-16. There are things to be said about comfort and riding
but when it comes to shear fun with what's left of my hair on fire the
venerable ol 130 is just not going to cut it! There are fighters and then
there are targets. The 130 is a target. When it comes to the fight, I'll
take 4 X 4 gun any day with the ability to shoot back not throughing trash
out to the back. As for comfort, the Viper is strapped on like your favorite
pair of driving gloves. You strap her on as an extension of yourself not
walk up the steps/ramp into a cavern. With that 30 degree tilt seat, I'm
quite comfortable in that little cocoon with the panoramic view not having
to ID my foe by looking out at the world through a portal. Although a nimble
aircraft, the 130 will shuck her wings at 9 Gs everytime!
