Oh wonderful One of Socialist State of Mexifornia!
I ran fresh air from back side of air compressor air cooling horn into coc
kpit where I plug in my MBU-5 oxygen mask for nice cool fresh air from fro
nt of aircraft. Used 1" Scat hose. Put brass filter screen where I placed
hose onto horn with little 1" flange thingy so I eat no bugs in process.
Replace mask mike with mike off David Clark, plugs right in. Its works
perfectly, and the funny thing is when I take off the mask in flight for
a candy break I can easily smell the odors surrounding me. Brass screen
is a must to cut down on air pressure to mask, now it works just like a
pressure oxygen mask.
I tried everything else, sealing up all the nooks and cracks, sealing up
around the oil cooler, everything, still smoke system smoke in the cockpi
t! Theres just no way to stop it coming in, or at least none I can figure
out. Then if the canopy is cracked open, even more!
Easy with the mask program. No applause, just send money.

Thanks for the info. The mask idea is a good one and I'm in the process of putting
that into play in my plane as we speak, along with forced air via a naca
scoop. The other way that we have found to be effective in reducing the CO in
the cockpit is to louver 4 access panels on the plane. The panel on the belly
where the 2nd snot valve is (when was the last time you cleared that, folks?),
the left side bottle drain access panel just aft of the trailing edge of the
wing, and the two access panels on the tail.
We have fabricated the dyes and if anyone wants this done you can send your panels
and we'll turn them around in a week. We tried outsourcing this with several
shops and they couldn't make their dyes work without cracking the soft material,
so we tooled up to do them in house.
This addition alone makes a big difference, as Craig Payne's article in Red Alert
sometime back demonstrated. Look at that video again, gang. Every one of
us is breathing CO ALL THE TIME, the smoke just colors what we don't otherwise
see.

Read the article in Red Stars latest edition, type set errors and all. The
take home message is the same. That data was put to gather and verified over
multiple sorties along with over years of testing. You can do all the
structural mods you want but you are not getting rid of the Carbon Monoxide.
Short of completely sealing the cockpit fore and aft with sealed bulkheads
and canopy seals with fresh compressed air from a source that is not sitting
behind the engine sucking air from the leaks in the exhaust stacks, that is
the only way to almost zero CO in the pit with you. The only way to
guarantee that you have zero CO inspired (you breath in) is to use a closed
fresh air system. That being an aviators mask that has been fit tested to
ensure a good seal and a sealed regulator getting a fresh air supply that is
not communicating with the cockpit ambient air.

You people are simply crazy to sit and breath that 100% of the time your
flying. There is no way to keep it out of the cockpit and its the same old
BS, "what you can't see won't hurt you." Where there's smoke there's death!

Barry,
You are dead on. It is present from engine start to shut down. Just a little
higher at different times. But in any case you are breathing in a
significant amount over an 8 hour period if you do 3 turns on a Saturday.
The MBU-12 mask can be purchased from Barnes and Gibson for one if you do
not have an old helmet/mask combination from earlier.

Bundini,
Which Dav Clark mic did you use. The converter (8 to 150 ohms impedance) I
got from Flight Suits.com has a high pitched squeal each time I key the
mike. They have tried to resolve that but no joy yet. We are on our third
converter.
When you say plugs right in do you mean that the com block on the mask will
plug right into the connectors for the mic at its base? Have you had any
degradation of the mike over time due to moisture build up in the mask? That
was the reason it was recommended that I stayed with the M 101 military
mic.
Before you are totally comfortable with your fresh air source please run a
CO monitor pickup in the mask during taxi and shut down. Your exposure is
definitely less than the rest that are doing nothing except going flying for
sure with your current arrangement.
The trumpet was where I was going to pull fresh air from to run the CO
scrubber system from. Since there was no interest in that system, the idea
was dropped. If there is interest then I will resurrect it.

Doc,
All I did was remove the David Clark mike from my old 10-80 headset and pu
t it in the mask. Loud and clear right from the get go. But I hear tell
it depends on the radios as well. Mine are Becker.
The Davie Clark electret mic I used is a Model M-7A, P/N 09168P-33. Yea
it just plugs right on the same terminals, easy. I have had this thing
up and running for four years now, no problems whatsoever.
My air source is at the front of the gills, via the air compressor cooling
air horn, positive pressure all the time. It was an easy install, and ze
ro CO at the mask, it may be a little inconvieount because of the mask but
I actually like it now. Canopy open and zero mic noise for intercom and
transmitting.

Good to hear you got smart! I got so sick of So Cal I moved as well! Nex

I found we had to restrict the inflow air to the mask or the pressure woul

Yea everyone is flying around on CO in a CJ or Yak, same old problem, sile

in your judgment or flying skills.
Whats a snot valve? :)
Happy flying!

Thats Bunnderella to you Mr. Partsman!
I actually pump in CO to the back pit, put the sniveling whinny bastards
to sleep! Thats why I did the mask in the front in the first place, got
tired of "I need to pee!", "I'm hungry!", "Are we there yet?"
I watch my formation mirror and when their head drops forward I give them
about thirty more seconds of CO and then shut the valve. Then the remaini
ng keeps them purty quiet till we arrive. They all get headaches tho, wor
king on that! Thinking aspirin before we take off.......

All I did was remove the David Clark mike from my old 10-80 headset and pu

it depends on the radios as well.

Bundini,
Which Dav Clark mic did you use. The converter (8 to 150 ohmsimpedance) I
got from Flight Suits.com has a high pitched squeal each time Ikey the mi
ke. They have tried to resolve that but no joy yet. We are on ourthird con
verter.
When you say plugs right in do you mean that the com block onthe mask will
plug right into the connectors for the mic at its base? Have youhad any
degradation of the mike over time due to moisture build up in the mask?Th
at was the reason it was recommended that I stayed with the M 101military
mic.
Before you are totally comfortable with your fresh air sourceplease run a
CO monitor pickup in the mask during taxi and shut down. Yourexposure is
definitely less than the rest that are doing nothing except goingflying
for sure with your current arrangement.
The trumpet was where I was going to pull fresh air from to runthe CO scru
bber system from. Since there was no interest in that system, theidea was
dropped. If there is interest then I will resurrect it.

Oh wonderful One of Socialist State of Mexifornia!
I ran fresh air from back side of air compressor air cooling horn into coc
kpitwhere I plug in my MBU-5 oxygen mask for nice cool fresh air from fron
t ofaircraft. Used 1" Scat hose. Put brass filter screen where I placedho
se onto horn with little 1" flange thingy so I eat no bugs in process.Repl
ace mask mike with mike off David Clark, plugs right in. Its worksperfect
ly, and the funny thing is when I take off the mask in flight for acandy
break I can easily smell the odors surrounding me. Brass screen isa must
to cut down on air pressure to mask, now it works just like a pressureoxy
gen mask.
I tried everything else, sealing up all the nooks and cracks, sealing up
aroundthe oil cooler, everything, still smoke system smoke in the cockpit
! Theres just no way to stop it coming in, or at least none I can figureou
t. Then if the canopy is cracked open, even more!
Easy with the mask program. No applause, just send money.

Barry,
Good to hear you got smart! I got so sick of So Cal I moved as well! Next
move is Nevada I believe.
I found we had to restrict the inflow air to the mask or the pressure would
blow your damn cheeks up!
Yea everyone is flying around on CO in a CJ or Yak, same old problem, silent
invisible killer. Not to mention any long term effects or degradation in
your judgment or flying skills.
Whats a snot valve? :)
Happy flying!

So tell me - if you have a fresh air vent at the top of the canopy, is that air
still not good?
Thanks!

+Read the article in Red Stars latest edition, type set errors and all. The
+take home message is the same. That data was put to gather and verified over
+multiple sorties along with over years of testing. You can do all the
+structural mods you want but you are not getting rid of the Carbon Monoxide.
+Short of completely sealing the cockpit fore and aft with sealed bulkheads
+and canopy seals with fresh compressed air from a source that is not sitting
+behind the engine sucking air from the leaks in the exhaust stacks, that is
+the only way to almost zero CO in the pit with you. The only way to
+guarantee that you have zero CO inspired (you breath in) is to use a closed
+fresh air system. That being an aviators mask that has been fit tested to
+ensure a good seal and a sealed regulator getting a fresh air supply that is
+not communicating with the cockpit ambient air.

William,
The very top of the canopy bow is free of CO. There is about 3-4 ppm of CO
beginning 1/2 way down the canopy bow. It is 5 ppm at the canopy rail. It
goes up to between 10 ppm and 15 ppm 1/2 down the side of the fuselage. It
is roughly 20 ppm at the wing root. At the waist level with the engine
idling and canopy cracked to the first detint has on average 25 ppm that
spikes to 35 ppm with engine runup. Higher in the 50. You are literally
sitting in a CO bath. I have heard that high CO reading alarm on the Daeger
CO meter way to many times.
On the 555 I do not know if you have a vent right on top of the glare shield
like the 50 does. If so that usually reads 5 -6 ppm on the 50.
