Subject: | Re: Winter woes in FLA |
Went flying with six RV guys the other day as my plane continues to be in the shop
getting repairs done to it. Ground temps here in NC were in the low 30s at
5000 feet where we were flying, it was in the teens. However, it was a cloudless
day. Of the six, I flew in the only plane with heat - an RV-7! However,
with their small cockpits and the greenhouse effect, it was not too bad and
we didn't turn the heat on. Of course, those planes are not drafty either!
Temps like this are unusual here as we have normal mid-day temps in the 50s during
Jan. What we all discussed was wearing heated clothing. One guy is buying
the clothing that can plug into a cigarette lighter. Draws several amps though
so gotta make sure the wiring and CBs are planned properly.
Here is a link to battery powered clothing which I think is a great option.

IMHO/SWAG is that they are much smaller in stature and if you look at 1960s

The shop working on my plane was wondering why paint was lifting off a newly painted
prop. After inspecting the areas, they found intergranular corrosion on
the prop blades. Given the unknown age of the prop and hub, it may make sense
to replace the entire prop with an overhauled prop rather than just replacing
the blades.
If anybody has an overhauled prop with logs, please contact me off list.
Thanks,
Craig W.

Subject: | YAK 50 Spar attachment bracket. |
Hello all from a snowy England.
Our YAK 50 is on annual at the moment, and our engineers have found inter-granular
corrosion in the material of the REAR RIGHT spar attachment bracket, and it
is going to have to be replaced.
Does anyone out there in the Yak community have such a part or are aware of a scrap
airframe where the bracket could be liberated?
Fabrication is our fall back option, but unfortunately we can't paint 'EXPERIMENTAL'
on the side and get on with it! Our feds will take an age to approve a new
build part (despite its simplicity), so an existing part is preferred.
Many thanks.
Mark Levy

Craig,
Inter granular corrosion is not unheard of in the Chinese metal props.
I've seen not less 3 cases of it. It has a lot to do with improper
quenching at the mill during manufacture. If you don't have any corrosion in
the
hub, you just need to replace the blades. Check with Doug Sapp.

Hi Craig,=0AI agree with Jim on the prop problem. I am on my third set of b
lades. The I have now-I got- from Doug and then stripped them , and=0As
anded them , and refinished with epoxy paint . They might last a while. As
Jim says, your hub is probably fine.-=0ATerry=0A=0A=0A=0A________________
