Hey Craig,
I bet you guys are wishing you had some extra pairs of long under-ware and
thicker coats now. Maybe a set of those heated insole liners, gloves and
vest to tide you through this Arctic Blast. Did I see 19 for tonight in
Ocala? Without those heated long johns that CJ is gonna get pretty darned
cold.
Flew yesterday in a balmy 33 deg. Even my Swedish Air Force Air War College
exchange pilot (pax) found it to be "a little bit" chilly but 50 min of acro
in the 52 will keep ya warm anytime. Lars went home with a big smile on his
face at the end of the sortie. He was a Viggin Squadron Commander before
coming to AWC. Glad even in the cold to be able to make his day. Nine months
with no air under your ass gets to be a long dry spell.
The first comment he made when he walked into the hanger for the EAA
meeting, "why so many Russian Aircraft?" My comment..." the free world won
the cold war these were the spoils of war."
"Communism, lousy politics...great airplanes." Drew Blahnick

Went flying with six RV guys the other day as my plane continues to be in
the shop getting repairs done to it. Ground temps here in NC were in the
low 30s at 5000 feet where we were flying, it was in the teens. However, it
was a cloudless day. Of the six, I flew in the only plane with heat - an
RV-7! However, with their small cockpits and the greenhouse effect, it was
not too bad and we didn't turn the heat on. Of course, those planes are not
drafty either!
Temps like this are unusual here as we have normal mid-day temps in the 50s
during Jan. What we all discussed was wearing heated clothing. One guy is
buying the clothing that can plug into a cigarette lighter. Draws several
amps though so gotta make sure the wiring and CBs are planned properly.
Here is a link to battery powered clothing which I think is a great option.

Gentlemen,
Larry Pine and I have been outfitting my CJ for night flight with wing
strobes and a red strobe for the top of the rudder. We were also
planning on replacing that anemic, barely visible flashlight bulb on the
tail with a LED position light / strobe from Aveo Engineering.
Last week on the Internet I came across what appeared to be an exact LED
drop-in replacement for the Chinese bulb. It's 24 volt, LED cluster that
has the same bayonet base, draws very little current, is astonishingly
bright and basically lasts forever. This would also be a direct, drop-in
replacement for those three lights on the nose gear and mains. This
particular LED arrangement has viewing angle of 90 degrees, so it is
brightest when viewed mostly from straight ahead. Here is where I found
this:
www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Dis
p=%2Fother_bulbs.htm
The web site navigation is a little confusing and flat-footed, but
basically what you would be looking for is the 24 volt, white, dual
contact, single intensity, 15 mm 1142 bayonet base. The ordering
designation is: 1142-W15-24V White LED bulb - 24V.
A few days ago my order arrived and last night we tested the landing
gear and tail lights in place. Wow!
I've attached a picture of what this looks like installed. For about six
bucks each they are the cheapest upgrades I've installed to date.
