Hi Jim;
Have not heard back from Shelby as yet. I sent him a list of
questions some time back. I assume he is working on that.
Cheers;

Walt,
I hope this message finds you doing well. Did Shelley get in
contact with you regarding the Placards? If not, let me know and I'll
see what he wants to do. He's going to need these before calling the FAA
out for Inspection. Have a great evening and I look forward to hearing
from you.
Best Regards
Jim

Mark if I remember correctly you have to buy the whole kit from Kimball
to convert. But that might have changed. I have converted my AC to all
AN pretty much. Just makes it easier done the road. I just bought a AN
-12 nipple and had it welded on the stock inlet tube, pretty easy.

Thank you for this well thought out and accurate answer TGB.
Your answer gives me, as well as everyone else, a clear picture of the
issues at hand.
Kevin Kimball sometimes reads this list, so I will take a wild chance
here and post a question to him that maybe he could answer.
I notice that Kevin Kimball Enterprises sells a kit called the M-14P1
that converts all the M-14 fittings to accept AN type hoses.
Can KKE sell just the adapter fittings necessary so that a person can
run a complete AN hose from engine to oil tank, with AN fittings every
step of the way. From engine, to shutoff valve, to tank. ALL AN
fittings? No metric to AN hoses necessary???
Thanks,
Mark Bitterlich

Subject: Re: Yak-List: To all those that think they are mechanics I
offer this!
Mark,
Any good aviation supply house can make hoses. I think you can even
order them from Aircraft Spruce giving them the length. The real
problem is that the valves come with an AN-12 (U.S.) outlet hose
fitting and our engines have a metric fitting of basically the same size
but different threads (metric) on the engine. We in turn use the stock
hose or new US hose, leave the stock metric fitting on one end and then
shorten the hose to fit as the new valve makes this necessary and then
install a new AN-12 hose fitting that now mates to the valve. So metric
on one end and AN on the other.
Its not really a lot of trouble but you do have to know how to make up
an aircraft type hose. This means purchasing the -12 hose making
mandrel so that you do not cut a flap of rubber inside the hose and
cause it to close off. The hoses from the tank to the engine are not
under pressure so they are not prone to leaking, so really the type of
fittings and hoses we and the Chinese use are overkill.
If I was most and had basis mechanical skills, tools and knowledge I
would buy the mandrel and parts I needed and make up the hose myself as
its not really hard. Also of note is that you can use U.S. AN -12
Aeroquip 303 hose with the large Chinese fittings and we have done this
many times. But its about the only hose you can use with them.
Trying to make up a general kit for such a limited item (I have found
most people won't invest in excellent engine mods over gadgets in the
cockpit) is not cost effective given the many different Russian aircraft
types so we just don't do it. So as I said you must have some pretty
good mechanical abilities or take it to someone who does. But in my
personal opinion and experience the oil tank shut off valve is one of
the best mods that can be done to the radial engine bar none.
Also of note is that our manual valves do not come with the operating
cable because people put it in so many various places because of gagets
they have installed in the cockpit, so trying to have a standard install
across the board just doesn't work. So once they figure out where they
can install the push pull cable they just buy it from AC Spruce. The
last one we did we put the cable handle just in front of the stock
starter switch (Nanchang) so that when the valve is shut off the cable
handle is up in front of the starter switch blocking it. Also there is
a starter interlock switch on the valve so that it will not start unless
the valve is fully open.
Thanks for your question and if I can be of help just let me know. But
I encourage everyone to install a shut off valve, its very cheap
insurance over buying a new engine or having one fail because of hydro
lock and it also saves oil. Bill Blackwell has installed many of these
valves so he is the best go to install guy I know.
Cheers and safe flying!

Hi, all...
Does anyone sell those Yak-52 FOD barriers anymore? I seem to recall
that someone used to make one from Cordura or something but
discontinued selling them.
My (1993) model came from the factory with a curtain that covers
pretty much the whole area behind the rear seat. I'm not sure if that
was intended to do the job or if the smaller apparatus near the tail
is needed.
Thanks in advance for any advice. -Eric

You need to fabricate a barrier out of Ceconite to cover the last
bulkhead in the tail cone. Also, if you can get to them, the holes in
the bulkhead just below the vertical fin.

Dennis... I did that on a previous Yak, but I was hoping there was
something already cut and hemmed with velcro on it... I had seen
something on a website years ago, then they were discontinued.
