Jon,
I had the opportunity to fly the Hind D in a former life =93 not very
nimble as compared to our attack helicopters, but it is strongest airplane
I think I've ever flown.=C2- Ground taxi is just like my CJ without the
collective input of course.

While slightly off topic, a few people here seem to like news from the Cold
War Air Museum.
Saturday we took out the "Big Iron" -- Mi-24D Hind and MiG-23UB Flogger --
and took them for a walk.=C2- Also brought out some of the L-39s and Mi-2
helicopters.
http://blog.cwam.org/2010/01/soviet-big-iron-saturday.html
A quick trip to the blog is worth it just for the fireball that the Mi-24D
makes on start!
I got to taxi the MiG for a short bit including a run-up to 90% power (nowh
ere near afterburner).=C2- Starts and taxis very, very easy... any of y'a
ll could do it no problem if you have any experience in Red Star aircraft.
The short video around the taxiways worked out to be 100 liters of gas.=C2
- ouch.=C2- Half of that was the run-up.
A former Russian AF Major just showed up the other day.=C2- Lots of exper
ience in MiG-21, MiG-23 and MiG-29.=C2- Super, super nice guy.=C2- And
a big help since the only really good Flogger POH I have is in Russian.=C2
- :-)

Been lurking the forum/list for some time and been getting to know the So. Cal

I'm a Red Star member and looking forward to joining the community. Thanks to Barry

Bob and I just completed the delivery flight from Oklahoma to California so now

If using a B&C Alternator has anyone put a blast air tube to it for
cooling?
Is this necessary?

Subject: | B&C Alternator Question |
The original generator has a specification for maximum rating both with
and without cooling air.
Please consider that this was a 3 KW generator meaning it could handle
about 100 amps... More or less.
There are TWO types of B&C alternators that can go on the YAK. One is
the 10 amp PMG model, and the other is a 35 amp standard alternator
model.
The 10 amp PMG model, that uses the small external regulator module
(that does not have over-voltage protection unless you buy an additional
kit) and is a SEALED UNIT. The maximum continuous load rating of this
unit is 280 watts. The case design can easily dissipate 100 watts of
heat or more ambient, so I personally do not think forced cooling is
necessary. Keep in mind that the old generator (3 KW) that was on there
could ALSO run without any cooling air at all, but you had to de-rate it
to a much lower rating if you did that... Which by the way was over 10
amps.
The 35 amp model also is used in various other aircraft, all WITHOUT
forced air cooling.
Alternators by and large are more efficient that generators, so they
generate less overall heat. In addition, on the 10 amp model, the
rectifier is external, so even less heat is generated in the unit
itself.
Based on that, I really do not think external cooling is necessary.
If there is any doubt, fire up the motor to about 60% power or more,
turn on every darn thing in the aircraft that you can turn on, and run
it for about 10 minutes or less. Then use an IR temp gun and read the
difference in temperature between the engine case and the B&C alternator
case. If there is a major temp. difference, then use your air tube.
Mark Bitterlich.
P.s. Every single YAK or Sukhoi that I have experience with that has
this small 10 amp B&C does NOT have a blast tube for air cooling. What
usually goes first is the voltage regulator. Purchase of the
over-voltage protection kit with this model is HIGHLY recommended. If
the PMG generator does fail, it is usually a mechanical failure and not
an electrical one (as would be the case with over-heating).

Terry,
On my CJ I used the cooling tube that was used to cool the old
Generator. it's already there and pointing the right direction.
I think blast air cooling would be helpful for the alternator.

Pete,
I'd love to talk with you offline. I've just purchased a CJ and will be based
up near Vandenberg AFB. I'd appreciate discussing your training and how you went
about it.

Just discovered a great air leak detector, much easier to use and not
as messy as soapy water.
Called SNOOP, well named I thought.
Comes in a small, pocket ( 8 oz.) plastic container ( 1/12 diam X 5"
long ) complete with an applicator tube that is coiled inside ready to
extend up to 12" for a application. Works great.
