They fly fine but there is a slight instability which is a little
disconcerting.
I suggest adding another 20 kph to approach speeds as well.
Also a bit drafty!!

Powerful account of my friend's general aviation flight into Haiti from a f

HAITI FLIGHT

Glen Marsh and I departed St. Simons, GA early on January 31st bound for Po
rt-au-Prince , Haiti in my King Air A90. =C2- On board we had a full load
of medical supplies including narcotics for pain along with two emergency
room doctors from Albuquerque , NM , and the founder of an orphanage in Por
t au Prince. =C2- We were given a =9Cslot time=9D to arrive i
n Port au Prince of 1530 Local time (3:30 EST). =C2- Our first stop was F
t. Pierce , Florida where we would refuel the airplane for the next leg of
our trip to Provodencialis, a small island in the Turks and Caicos chain.
=C2- This stop was necessary to refuel prior to entry into Port au Prince
where limited fuel is currently available for general aviation aircraft.
=C2- We landed in Provo (as it is called in the islands) where we found p
eople who were extremely helpful. =C2- Once they knew our mission they we
re even more helpful. =C2- A steady stream of general aviation aircraft c
arrying workers and supplies had passed through this island on the way to H
aiti since the earthquake. =C2- =C2- We refueled, filed a flight plan,
cleared customs, and ate a quick sandwich that was provided by a local woma
n who makes the sandwiches daily and brings them to the airport to feed the
people on the way to Haiti . =C2- I was amazed at the kindness and assis
tance exhibited by everyone involved at all of the fixed based operations w
here we stopped. =C2-
=C2-
We departed Provo at 1430 EST for the 1 hour flight to Port au Prince. =C2
- For those of you who are pilots we flew to the Haitian airspace boundar
y under the =C2- air traffic control of Miami Center . =C2- When we ent
ered Haitian airspace we could not make radio contact. =C2- We had been w
arned by others that the air traffic was heavy in the area and the air traf
fic control was minimal. =C2- That was an understatement. =C2- We did n
ot make radio contact until we were about 80 miles from our destination.
=C2- Even then, we barely understood the instructions of the Haitian cont
roller. =C2- There is no radar in this area at all so traffic separation
is accomplished through radio communications only. =C2- We were hopeful t
hat once on approach control frequency that we would encounter United State
s military controllers. =C2- That did not happen until we contacted the c
ontrol tower about 10 miles from the field. =C2- Thank God the weather wa
s good. =C2- We had very confusing instructions that we could hardly unde
rstand until we reached the tower controller. =C2-
=C2-
Haiti is a beautiful country that is laced with very rugged mountains. =C2
- Port au Prince lies at the foot of a mountain chain on the west coast o
f the country. =C2- Our final approach course (landing to the east at the
airport) took us over a very picturesque harbor. =C2-=C2- The water wa
s dotted with ships =93 mostly from the United States Navy. =C2- On
e ship stood out above all the rest, the hospital ship USNS Mercy. =C2- T
hree red crosses were visible on the side of the ship. =C2-
=C2-
We could see some of the destruction on the way to the runway. =C2- Very
few houses had roofs on them. =C2- Small fires were seen in many areas.
=C2- Helicopters were everywhere carrying supplies. =C2- Few large buil
dings were left standing. =C2-
=C2-
The city of Port au Prince is spread out over a very large square mile area
. =C2- It lies at the foot of a mountain chain. =C2- The airport itself
is located almost in the middle of the city. =C2- It has one very long 1
0,000 ft runway with no parallel taxiways. =C2- When you land you must ta
xi on the runway to get to the terminal. =C2- The terminal area was full
of airplanes including 3 United States Air Force C-17=99s. =C2- In
addition there was one Russian cargo plane along with a scattering of other
aircraft that were being off loaded. =C2- Fortunately, one of our passen
gers had made arrangements for us to go to the Missionary Aviation Fellowsh
ip ramp, located just to the east of the main terminal. =C2-
=C2-
When we taxied in we were met by several locals who assisted in unloading a
ll of the supplies. =C2- A nurse we were expecting to meet us was there w
aiting anxiously. =C2- One of the doctors we carried was in his mid thirt
ies and the other in his fifties. =C2- When they stepped off the airplane
I could see the apprehension in their faces. =C2- They did not know what
to expect, where they would sleep, or how they would return to their home.
=C2- The older doctor told me =9Cthis is the first trip I have tak
en without an exit plan or knowing how or when I will get back home.
=9D =C2- I told them we would be back to pick them up. =C2-
=C2-
The nurse came up to them, hugged them, and told them that she had spent th
e entire day wrapping stumps of legs and arms that were amputated. =C2- S
he had just finished wrapping a woman=99s leg who had also lost her 4
year old daughter in the earthquake. =C2- The look of anguish in the eye
s of the nurse was unforgettable. =C2- She said that she had never seen s
o many people without limbs. =C2- She told us that people had been waitin
g for medical attention for days some with compound fractures and most with
major injuries. =C2- Operations are being performed without proper anest
hesia, medicines are needed, and narcotics for pain are needed.
=C2-
We watched the doctors disappear from our view walking alongside the nurse.
=C2- I felt their uncertainty and could not help but wonder what they we
re going to encounter within a few minutes. =C2- The living conditions of
the volunteers are primitive at best. =C2- Most are living in their own
pup tents. =C2- There was no electricity. =C2- Food and water is scarce
. =C2-=C2- The airport is laden with tents and supplies. =C2- Acres a
nd acres of shipping containers are waiting to be distributed. =C2- Beave
r Brooks, the gentleman who operates the orphanage, told us that his minist
ry is feeding 3,000 people per day. =C2- He said they need to be feeding
30,000 per day. =C2- He stated that the biggest challenge they are encoun
tering is getting food and water distributed to the people. =C2-
=C2-
We were on the ground less than 1 hour. =C2- General aviation airplanes a
re only given 1 hour to offload and depart the airport. =C2- We called th
e military tower and received permission to takeoff without a flight plan.
=C2- We had no way to file a flight plan. =C2- =C2-=C2- There was n
o air traffic control until we were about 50 miles north of the Haiti coast
line where we picked up a familiar voice through the air traffic controller
s at Miami Center . =C2- We then made our way back to Provo to spend the
night. =C2-
=C2-
I spent one year in Viet Nam witnessing a lot of pain and suffering. =C2-
What little I saw in Port au Prince rivals that experience. =C2- The dea
th, suffering, and devastation are beyond comprehension. =C2- I do not be
lieve that we have any words in our language that can adequately describe w
hat has happened to the people of Haiti . =C2- I can tell you that if you
would like to help these people there are two organizations where you can
give your money and be assured it will be used to really help the individua
ls who need it. =C2- One is called Much Ministry. =C2- Beaver Brooks is
the head of this ministry. =C2- He has worked with orphans for the past
6 years and has a staff of volunteers who are feeding and caring for the pe
ople who have been affected by this tragedy. =C2- You can donate on their

The other group is called Citihope, International. =C2- They are located
in Andes, New York . =C2- I have worked with them to get people and suppl
ies to Haiti . =C2- I know money spent there will also get aid to the peo
ple who are in need. =C2- They may be reached at www.citihope.org . =C2
-=C2-=C2- You can go to the websites mentioned and read stories about
Haiti and what they are doing to help. =C2- I encourage you to take a fe
w minutes to do that.

I also want to emphasize the importance of the role general aviation has pl
ayed in supplying relief for this disaster. =C2- General aviation and cor
porate aircraft from all over the country have responded to the needs of th
ese people by transporting doctors, nurses, volunteers, medical supplies, f
ood, etc. to Haiti and also to the Dominican Republic where a number of hos
pitals have been set up for the Haitian people. =C2- The majority of pilo
ts and aircraft owners are volunteering their time along with the cost of o
perating their airplanes. =C2- During a time when general aviation is rec
eiving a lot of negative press, we need to direct attention to the positive
efforts being put forward by this group of pilots, mechanics, and aircraft
owners. =C2- Never have I seen such an outpouring of support by so many
airplane people. =C2- Without their help the disaster relief efforts for
the people of Haiti would be lacking. =C2- The response has been overwhel
ming and the general public needs to be aware of the capabilities that exis
t within the general aviation community along with their willingness to hel
p.
=C2-
I share this story with you not to bring attention to myself or any other i
ndividual pilot involved in humanitarian flights to Haiti . =C2- I simply
want you to be aware of what is really happening there and understand what
you can do to help. =C2- If you want to participate in a flight please l
et me know and I will direct you to the right people.

The following is a brief account of another flight flown by local pilot Lan
ce Toland. =C2- Lance flew to the Dominican Republic immediately after th
e earthquake. =C2- His story will provide emphasis to what I have written

=9CAs many of you are now sadly aware, we were unsuccessful in findin
g Courtney Hayes last week.=C2- Courtney was my friend=99s niece an
d in Haiti at the Montana Hotel.=C2- Courtney was a 20-year old missionar
y and PA student.=C2-=C2- She is now presumed dead.=C2- Please keep C
ourtney and her family in your thoughts and prayers.=C2-=C2- The trip w
as successful in other areas, however.=C2- I was able to supply needed or
thopedic surgical supplies to a doctor friend=99s Dominican boarder c
linic using another friend=99s Bell 206 (made me appreciate my EC120)
=C2- and one rental R44.=C2- Before I left Griffin , Georgia , in the P
C12,=C2- I called my life-long friend, Dr. Tommy Hopkins, for help.=C2-
Tommy was performing a hip replacement at the time.=C2- Within 45 minute
s of calling,=C2- Tommy=C2- responded with hundreds of pounds of surgic
al supplies.=C2-=C2- Additionally, a local pharmacist, David Clements,
on very short notice, unloaded a pickup truck of orthopedic supplies into m
y PC12.=C2-
=C2-
I spent a brief amount of time in the border clinic assisting alongside med
ical school and veterinarian students.=C2- I met surgeons who made me rea
lize how desperate their needs are. With that realization, I knew I had to
do more.=C2- I made a number of calls to CEOs and corporate aircraft owne
rs I know who turned their corporate flight departments over to me to get n
eeded surgical supplies, critical antibiotics and doctors into Haiti . I am
excited to tell you that dozens of flights (we lost count) have been flown
into Haiti carrying those desperately needed supplies and doctors.=C2- T
hose flights are from the same group of operators who were vilified in the
news media just a few months ago.=C2- Please help me get this information
out to everyone=94every television, radio, newspaper, blog, etc.
=94who will listen! General aviation made a incredible difference alongs
ide the Dominican people.=9D
