So not turn and roll rate, that's true. And I'm quite sure not less take off roll or more climb rate. Or maybe more inverted capability, max G or maybe not even top speed. I'm tired of hearing who has the best CJ. So, who has the Top CJ? El Numero Uno, the Big Tuna, King Kong? Changzilla? Many have well over 100HP over stock, Really Big Props, side exhaust, Malcom hoods, etc, etc. Top CJ-6? Obviously we have those that GO, those that Show, and some that Show & GO. There is only one way to sort this out...a shootout! Mano 'y Mano. A really big one. Problem is that we are scattered all over the US and Canada. If not this year, maybe next, certainly before 2012 ends. A purse you say? Certainly, some entry fee to sweeten the pot is in order. Sponsors? Perhaps. Under 175KTAS in level flight need not apply, save your money for old age or buy a Yak. What say ye Men of Honor? Soar with Eagles or Buzz with Buzzards? Everyone racing puts Money in the pot, winner takes all. I'm talking about the CJ-6 (or Yak-52) airframe. Assuming that some yahoo hasn't hung something besides a Huosai or M-14 variant engine, all mods allowed. Malcom hoods OK, RV-8 canopies OK, really BIG spinners OK, Massive, awe-inspiring props OK. Bright Chrome side exhausts OK. JATO bottles - bad sportsmanship. Many years ago, there was a Huosai engined CJ that was really fast. It was stripped to the shell, nothing in the back hole but seat and stick, 300 lbs less than mine. Haven't seen it since. Over the course of several timed races and test runs, I discovered that a CJ-6 needs quite a while to get that last 10 kts. Perhaps it's de-carbonizing but I believe that a 15-20 mile course would work. Craig Payne

Since in PITA's own words, We are scattered all over the 'WORLD' (Aussies). I suggest that we setup some parameters: course length, number of turns, turn direction, etc, etc, etc. Races should perhaps have more than one aircraft. Results posted on YAK-LIST? Entry fee collected through the RPA store somehow. Purse net based upon total collected with a chunk going to the RPA. Russ "AirBoss" WItte-Dycus

I all reality guys I am not going to run the guts out of my motor for less than 5K per race. This is the way I have it figured--- the first guy to win will have a automatic opportunity to do it again because the loser will have many ego saving excuses to go do it again, and as we all know and have seen ego overrules good fiscal responsibility every time. So after winning twice a fella can afford to have his motor overhauled (well almost). So you'd better come to grips with the fact that bragging rights are not worth squat, I fully agree with Pappy and would only add that just knowing that a portion of the 50 crisp C notes in my greasy palm actually came from you would be priceless. The CJ you refer to was Steve Culp's, who for a time offered to run anyone title for title, but could find no takers. Don't know where it ended up after he sold it. Doc, I think he is talking about... "ho hum" .... throttle to the firewall how fast will it go? The CJ-6 is a clean airframe with a good go-fast wing. With the right engine, in a simple straight and level BOY OH BOY who goes faster competition, I think the CJ-6 might take the 50, again only if it has a good engine on it. My bone stock YAK-50 will still do 200 mph straight and level... But that's ALL it will do. That's 360 HP, not 400. A two bladed paddle prop. Nothing else. Stock. Take off run: The 50 wins. Roll Rate: The 50 wins. Aerobatic capability: The 50 wins Climb rate: The 50 wins. Dog fight: The 50 wins, unless the pilot is really freaking lame. G Limitations: The 50 wins. Vne: The 50 wins. In a dive, the wings would come off the CJ before the 50 reached never exceed speed. :-) (That's a smile folks) Straight line go fast, nothing else... I think the CJ might just get the 50, but not by much if it did. Bone stock, firewalled, I do 174 knots. The CJ is faster than that right? Very well could be. Now pull it into anything other than straight and level and it becomes a dead meat target. And it carries two people. Cool. Pappy, was that the 50 or the 52? The 52 is painfully slow. For some reason, some folks think the 50 and the 52 perform about the same. Man, that was the best answer YET John! Mark P.s. Craig... Apples to Apples is a CJ to a CJ ... And a YAK to a YAK. I think you have opened things up beyond that correct? ?? P.p.s. Reno: Wait a minute... It's not even worth asking? And you now only want to put $100 into the pot? Man, I just spent $500 on brake parts for my UTVA-66. Speed costs money and speed is not cheap. I have no dog in this fight, but if I did, if I thought I had something worth bringing, I'd put 2 grand in the pot without blinking an eye. Seriously, at the very minimum $1000. Damn, I burn that much fuel in a MONTH. Craig... Come on now. P.p.p.s. I've got another bad idea. Let's start a side-bet ... My stock 50 does 200 mph. I believe that if I put a serious engine on it, like say about 430 HP or so, and had a prop specifically built for speed, then stripped the darn thing down even more, I might just get 220 mph out of the thing. That's darn close to T-6 speed. The "stock" T-6 speed is 200 mph. The stock YAK-50 speed is: 200 mph. I am not talking about 52's. I am not talking about CJ's. I'm talking about a YAK-50. Mark Bitterlich P.s. I have done a little dog-fighting with a T-6 down in Florida. It's a wonderful beautiful heavy airframe with a big 600 HP engine. I want one! However, the 50 tears it a new rear end in 1 v 1. Period. Copy all and maybe so if It were a competition with an M-14 powered CJ but not a Housi powered CJ. I'm figuring this race needs to be over a course. TO, climb to 3500 ft, fly 25 miles to nearby air port (say Tallassee, Al), do touch and go, climb back up to 3500 feet, RTB to 08A and land. The clock stops with engine shut down in front of my hanger at 08A. An observer will be at Tallassee and one at 08A. The Split times will be taken at time of Touch and go and at shut down. Whoever makes it through the course the fastest wins. The whole thing flown in uncontrolled airspace. MALS-14 64E" <mark.bitterlich@navy.mil> Doc, I think he is talking about... Cool. That's darn close to T-6 speed. The "stock" T-6 speed is 200 mph. The stock YAK-50 speed is: 200 mph. I am not talking about 52's. I am not talking about CJ's. I'm talking about a YAK-50. Subject: Running WFO
That's Wide F****** Open. On my current engine I have run it at full rated power (but NOT over) for over 20 minutes at a time. However I did not just jump into this. The Sukhoi guys do this all the time but I don't. There are ways to prep for this kind of operation: 1st: Set valve clearance to the outside limit (about .016"). Make sure that each of the 4 cams on the Int/Exh reads nearly the same. Do this by recording the difference on any given cylinder by pulling through at least 4 TDC and checking clearance. Average the difference for a setting. Next: "tweek" the governor and prop to achieve no more than 2900 rpm at WFO (M-14P) in level flight. I set the prop blade angle to as much as the governor will allow about at 2985 RPM. I use a digital tach for accuracy. Don't forget that prop unbalance stresses the engine unnecessarily. Do static and dynamic balance first. Next: Change oil before test runs and include a generous amount of MMO. I use it in BOTH fuel and oil during test runs. Also: Whilst testing at 80%, "tweek" the oil cooler outlet opening for the sweet spot where oil temps minimize and speed maximizes. Hint: it isn't wide open nor almost closed. Same goes for the shutters. Of course, be sure that plugs are clean, torqued, mags timed to upper end of advance limits. Extended runs 80% power is a safe way to clean out the carbon before WFO runs. Don't forget to use 93 octane Mogas, W/O ethanol if possible. I'm not concentrating on the airspeed or GPS speed when running, I'm scanning those temps, first sign of trouble of hickup and it's KIO with a pull towards the Blue. If something doesn't feel right, back it off. Craig Payne

Mark, Last year's #1 Qualifier at Reno, T-6 class was Six-Cat @ 239.350 Miles and hour. http://www.airrace.org/raceResultsQueryDisplay.php So it would be interesting to see a CJ-6/Yak category racing at Reno. It would definitely be cheaper to run an unlimited CJ-6/Yak then P-51/Sea Fury. It could end up being the new Formula or Biplane class for the average pilot. Although if anyone has a spare Sea Fury sitting around, I have an extra R-4360 (rebuilt) looking for a home. Think we can fit it on my Yak-52?
