Yes=2C that was the first thing I tried. It didn't seem to be "popped" and
turning it off and on didn't make a difference. :-(

Has there been any regulatory or advisory bulletin,etc. released by the FAA
re: polishing of propellers blades?
The same "rumour" is rampant in Canada as well and I cannot recall receiving
any notice from TC on the subject.

I wonder if it stems from the "major repair or alternation" statement in the Operating
Limitations? I think it's a stretch to consider polishing a propeller
a major change. But then again, they have the power and as the FAA inspector
says, "We're not happy until you're not happy." I believe the OL's state that
the local FSDO must be notified of a major repair or alteration.

prior to flying
this aircraft after incorporation of a major change as defined by 21.93.
(Applicability: All)
21.93 says:
(a) In addition to changes in type design specified in paragraph (b) of this section,
changes in type design are classified as minor and major. A "minor change"
is one that has no appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength,
reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting
the airworthiness of the product. All other changes are "major changes"
(except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section).
Paragraph (b) has nothing in it that would apply.

You need to determine whether it is a gen light fault, or the thing is
doing it's job and just telling you that the generator is simply not
working!
Check your voltmeter and see if it rises when you increase engine RPM
past say 60% or so (just a WAG on the actual number, I am not a CJ
electrical expert).
Failing that, put a meter on the generator output while running and see
what it reads.
If all this sounds too hard ... Contact an A&P.

The suggestion on the spring tension in the mag was a good one.
Other things I would suggest... May sound a little nuts, but not really....
Go fly above your airport and where all this starts happening. Start shutting
things off. Start with the generator. Continue shutting off everything you can
and leave just the master switch on.
Last thing... Shut off the mags one at a time, and then BOTH shut off. In other
words, kill the motor.
Of course you can do a lot of this on the ground as well. In that case, you would
need a sig gen and inject a signal into the radio via a "T" connector so the
antenna stays connected. Inject just enough signal to hear it (1 Khz tone)
and then start the thing up and troubleshoot it on the ground.
RG-58 is "OK" but RG-142 or RG-223 is a LOT better. Both are double shielded.
If you can get it to do this on the ground with the sig gen, there are a lot of
additional tests that can be done.
Basically you need to determine whether it is coming in via aircraft power, (noise
on the power wiring) or... It is coming in through the antenna. If the latter,
you then need to find what is causing it and take steps. Can't tell you
what steps to take until you can narrow down what is making the noise.

Hi all
We have a ongoing RX problem with our Baklan 5 VHF. The unit TX is fine with good
transmitter range. But the RX fades out at about 5 miles from the station with
a loud clicking/ static throughout. (the clicking could be associated with
a poor ignition suppressor.) We have replaced the original VHF antenna with a
western one with no change, using RG-58 cable and BNC connectors.
The RX problem seems to be worse on lower Freqs 118.0 thru to 123.6.
The new antenna has a SWR of 2.5:1. So we are guessing that its not an aerial issue.
Any help/ tips to resolve this ongoing problem would be much appreciated.

The FAA had determined the polishing of a propeller on a [b]certified[/b] aircraft
to render the part unairworthy. It removes the corrosion protection that
the manufacture has installed. Since the anodizing is part of the manufacturing
process and the blade is certified with the protection installed you can not
remove it or if you do you need to replace it during overhaul. Since we do
not have certificated aircraft in the US the auto plug conversions/oil filters
autopilots , Dynons and all the other stuff would render the plane unairworthy
the same way

I've had the same issue with my radios for the past year. After reading
Dale's post last week I pulled the cap off of both mags last weekend. The
spring tension was good, but the spring had rust/corrosion on it. I removed
and cleaned the spring and all contacts inside the cap, put it back together
and the radio is now the clearest and loudest it's ever been. Easy to do
first before going deeper.

How has the FAA imparted this dubious bit of wisdom? Have they issued an
Airworthiness Directive, an Advisory Circular or ??????
I have had no luck finding it but am not really familiar with the FAA's
system. Also could not find it in Transport Canada's website where I am
supposed to be familiar. I will call my favorite prop. shop and find out.
Anodizing, if still in use by the manufacturers, is generally removed at the
first overhaul and as far as I know very few, if any, propeller overhaul
shops are set up to re-anodize. Paint is the accepted method.
