Subject: | Re: Automotive Plugs and Prop Gov Setup For M14P |
Just out of curiosity, where did you get your EE degree?
Running a wider gap on a plug ... ANY plug, means that you have to develop more
voltage to jump that gap. Add compression and the amount of voltage required
jumps even higher. The higher the voltage required to jump that gap, the higher
the secondary voltage will be on the mag COIL. The higher the voltage is
in the secondary of the mag COIL, the more easy it is to have insulation breakdown
and failure occur. That's why true racing systems develop voltages upwards
of 40 to 50 THOUSAND volts and don't break down when operated at that voltage
level. Increasing spark plug gap will NOT lead to longer mag coil life.
Even assuming the wire resistance is a tad better or worse than the next guy.
A wider gap does indeed give a stronger spark and does indeed lead to better ignition
of the fuel mixture. It also requires a higher voltage. Lower wire resistance
increases current flow. Total voltage is still increased with a wider
gap, and your statement about these features extending coil life are arbitrary
and without basis other than pure conjecture and are factually incorrect.
The laws of physics still apply.
A very simple check would be to test the coil temp with different designs. The
inherent hysteresious loss of any coil will cause a temperature increase with
a higher voltage and current demand. If the temperature of the coil is decreased
with your system at least you would have some science involved with your
statements.

Gang,
One of the things I have neglected to mention previously is the concept of total
resistance - one of the biggest concerns of this discussion. Our system, developed
over a couple years by friends of WW working closely with gurus in high
energy electronic ignition systems, provides the lowest total resistance of
any upgraded ignition system for our engines that we are aware of. In addition
to the other benefits previously described, one of the biggest reasons for the
Iridium plugs is it allows us to run a wider gap and, using our ultra low resistance
8.5mm wire, and still have lower resistance than the other systems out
there, which makes the coils last longer.
Now, when an electronic system is developed, that will be the ticket....
Hope this helps,
Barry

Does anyone on the list have a baffed out Huosai mag they are willing to sell?
Hopefully
complete but worn components ok. There was a lad on this list I sold a Huosai engine
core to a few years back to replace his cracked block....any mags left over from
that one ?
Thanks.

Gents,
Still looking for a set of Yak-52 gill shutters for the M-14P conversion of my
CJ. The usual sources (George, Steve and Doug) have not seen a set for quite a
while. Am coming up blank with possible leads as far away as Australia and Romania.
If someone has a spare set, please contact me directly, off the Yak list.
I can offer a very good price.

Have you tried West London Aero Club / Russian Aeros in UK and Termikas,
Lithuania ?

I think you mean Aerostar in Romania. Expect to pay upwards of 3000
EURO for the assembly though.

Gents--
Note in the latest (July 2010) issue of Flying magazine there is an article
about the latest Lycoming engine--TEO-540-A1A. It is a "flex-fuel" engine
with electronic control. Note the picture on p. 72--sure looks like
automotive spark plugs to me. Interesting. Not much detail in the article,
sad to say...
