Subject: | Operating Limitations regarding Banner Towing in the UNITED |
STATES
Hi Jay,
You're absolutely correct about all the political nonsense that seems to
stem up from time to time. Interestingly enough, the last posting that
was the catalyst to that type of conversation came from right next door
to you in Australia. An international list indeed.
I also agree with you that your original banner towing question was
probably answered some time ago. I modified the question because I had
questions that pertained about some legality issues here in the United
States. I am sorry if that discussion did not interest you, but it did
interest me.
Understood that what we have to deal with here in the United States
(legality wise) does not interest you. Actually, I must admit that I am
fascinated with all of the different issues that impact ownership of
these aircraft around the world. And of course Matt DOES accept
donations for the support of this list server from any person from any
country on the planet, which we all try to help him with, at least I
know I do. I'm sure you do as well.
All Experimental Exhibition aircraft in the United States have to deal
with Operating Limitations, and the subject is germane to a lot of
readers on this list. If you would like, we can change the subject
title, so it will be easier for you to ignore in the future. In fact, I
just did.
I am sorry that you had to wade through some unnecessary answers when
looking to give "your customer" accurate answers. I totally agree that
a CJ-6 is not very practical for Banner Towing or Glider Towing because
of it's inability to fly at very low airspeeds.

Subject: Yak-List: Banner Towing - Part 2
Hi all,
Unfortunately I probably needed to make myself clearer in my question
posed re banner towing with a CJ.
As I live in New Zealand our rules are a whole heap different, so all
the BS you guys deal with re limitations and so forth do not apply down
here.
(Likewise I do not care for all the American political BS that turns up
on what purports itself to be an international list!)
The question re banner towing has more to do with the practicalities (or
lack of) of installing a banner tow rig on a CJ.
Personally I don't think it is an idea with much merit, but in the
interest of giving my customer the best information I thought would ask
the rest of the community what their thoughts were. Don't worry what the
rules say for now!
regards, Jay
New Zealand

I am experiencing similar problems. High density altitude at airfields in the
French Alps and no take off tables for altitude in my Yak-18T POH. So I'm using
a Koch Chart. I think it still applies fairly well to low-pressure supercharged
engines such as ours - it's not as though they are turbonormalised or have
a wastegate. Better than nothing, attached.

I read recently about a crop duster who got busted for flying (more than
once?) over the "fringes" of a small residential area on his way to/from
work. Caveat aviator.

Wirlwind propellers is in the process of making a spinner for the V530, I believe
its around a 19 dia. with a cost of around $1500. Also the new Composite
Blades that Wirlwind are making are great, they look very nice and have added
5 kts. to my cruise speed.
