Hi Didier,
look at the photo at the bottom of my previous posting showing the installation
in the 18 T. The pumps are Pierburg 24 V and 0,5 bar, ~ 90.- . The whole set
is homemade and sits under the rear floor in front of the service tank including
an extra one-way valve.

The serial number on you fire wall maybe either 4 digits or 7.
The first 2 digits are the batch number or a group of production airplanes
The last 2 digits are the airplane number in that batch.
If you have 3 digits in the middle, this will be the factory where the air
craft was assembled.
Example 2532059 (my airplane) was the 59th aircraft in batch 25. The 320
is the factory in Nanchang.
It was part of a batch of 80 aircraft built between May and November of 19
69.
In RPAs 2007 spring issue of Red Alert there a list of all serial number
with their dates of manufacture and number of aircraft in that batch.
If your airplane has a 285 hp HS6A engine in it, it is a CJ-6A. A CJ-6 ha
s the 260 hp engine. That's the only difference.

Coop,
Here is a picture showing the location of the serial number plate on the
firewall. Mine says "83 3932010 " indicating that it was manufactured
in 1983 with the serial number 3932010. I have heard that the serial
number may contain other manufacturing information. Perhaps someone on
the list may know how to decode it for you.
A CJ-6 has the 260 HP Housai and the CJ-6A has the 285 HP version. A
CJ-6 would be an older aircraft, probably from the early to mid 1960s. I
know that the 285 HP Housai started being used around the mid-1960s.

Warren,
Your airplane was assembled at the Nanchang factory. It was #10 in batch
39 which had 24 aircraft, built between Oct 1983 and May 1984. All 24 ai
rcraft were sent to the PLAF.
At one point both the CJ-6 and CJ-6A were on the production line at the sa
me time. It just depended on which engine they would put in them. You're
correct about the early ones being CJ-6s. At some point in their life,
some CJ-6s were made into 6As with an engine change.
There were other variants too, modified for special purposes. The CJ-6B
was a armed version of an A. Only 10 were built. There several others
too.

You probably have an HS6A. The unintelligable symbol is likely Chinese for "A".
Check the carburettor part # : QHQ-14 for the HS6, QHQ-14A for the HS6A (same

The first 2 digits are the batch number or a group of production airplanes
The last 2 digits are the airplane number in that batch.
If you have 3 digits in the middle, this will be the factory where the
aircraft was assembled.
Example 2532059 (my airplane) was the 59th aircraft in batch 25. The 320
is the factory in Nanchang.
It was part of a batch of 80 aircraft built between May and November of
1969.
In RPAs 2007 spring issue of Red Alert there a list of all serial number
with their dates of manufacture and number of aircraft in that batch.
If your airplane has a 285 hp HS6A engine in it, it is a CJ-6A. A CJ-6
has the 260 hp engine. That's the only difference.

I needed this to prove to Transport Canada that this was indeed a CJ-6A as all
my Chinese correspondence and papers referred only to the generic CJ-6, and I
need the airplane registered as a CJ-6A.
So a cautionary tale might be to always translate your serial number as explained
by Pappy. Get the manufacturing date off of the Red Alert archives and explain
that the manufacturing date and the 285 hp engine insist that this is therefor
a 6A.

You have to careful about shipping papers between countries. My airplane
was listed as a Yak 18A on all its customs documentation. Bureaucrats ar
e notorious for making such mistakes. And for a long time I thought it wa
s just a copy of the Russian airplane. But the history and people behind
the design CJ-6 is far more interesting.
I only wish I could find detailed photos of the production line while it
was going full tilt. At one point a CJ-6 was coming off the line every
3 days.

Well as an update I would like post the following.
Due to a lot of support from friends and a very good engineer we managed to replace
the bent rod, on #5
Below is what would consider a safe procedure, any comments? or additions?
I have been thinking a lot about the that fateful day and how the lock occurred
what could have been done to prevent it and what would I do differently?
We here is what I have come to think of good procedure, to prevent this happening
to myself again, and happening to one of you.
Never pull the prop on the end, always pull the prop half way along the blade,
this gives you less leverage and so limits the problem of bending a rod with the
prop. Which I believe is possible.
Always stop when ANY resistance is felt. Do not try and squeeze through the oil.
It is quite possible to squeeze the oil past the rings and so get through a
small lock.....but it HUGELY dangerous. With the leverage you have in your hand
through the prop you could easily damage the connecting rod.
NEVER TRUN THE PROP BACKWARDS!!!!!! This is arguably the most dangerous thing to
do, since it could allow the oil to go up into the intake manifold, ready to
be sucked into the cylinder and cause damage.
So as soon as there is any resistance felt stop turning the prop, and open the
two bottom cylinders,and allow time for the oil to drain, do NOT rush. Once the
oil has stopped draining then you MUST screw the plugs back in!!! Then pull
another full set of blades, I usually pull 16 blades. And if there any resistance,
then you need to stop and remove the plugs again. Allow time for the oil
to drain.....do NOT RUSH.
As soon as you can pull your blades and there is no resistance then you are ready
to fly.
There are options, like and oil shut off valve that allows you to shut the oil
off after you have stopped the engine, and this valve has a switch that will cut
the ignition circuit so you cannot start the engine with out the oil valve
being open. Part of the kit is a oil pump to pump the engine empty. The danger
here is the mounting of the oil valve could damage the oil tank.
It does not take a lot of oil to cause a lock, I have not worked it out but I would
guess that 100 ml will be enough. What ever the accurate figure is, it is
not a lot.

any interest in pre OSH activities. Lately we have participated in the
"mass arrival" by simply getting airborne right from OSH, getting into po

If there is an intake drain kit installed in the intake tubes of
cylinders 4,5 and 6 and you turn the prop backwards when you feel the
"stop", you will be opening the intake valve and allowing the oil to run
out of the locked cylinder through the drain kit. No harm will be done
using this technique. But as Francois has stated, DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS
YOU DO HAVE AN INTAKE DRAIN KIT INSTALLED.

Well as an update I would like post the following.
Due to a lot of support from friends and a very good engineer we
managed to replace the bent rod, on #5
Below is what would consider a safe procedure, any comments? or
additions?
I have been thinking a lot about the that fateful day and how the lock
occurred what could have been done to prevent it and what would I do
differently?
We here is what I have come to think of good procedure, to prevent
this happening to myself again, and happening to one of you.
Never pull the prop on the end, always pull the prop half way along
the blade, this gives you less leverage and so limits the problem of
bending a rod with the prop. Which I believe is possible.
Always stop when ANY resistance is felt. Do not try and
=9Csqueeze=9D through the oil. It is quite possible to
=9Csqueeze=9D the oil past the rings and so get through a
small lock.....but it HUGELY dangerous. With the leverage you have in
your hand through the prop you could easily damage the connecting rod.
NEVER TRUN THE PROP BACKWARDS!!!!!! This is arguably the most
dangerous thing to do, since it could allow the oil to go up into the
intake manifold, ready to be sucked into the cylinder and cause damage.
So as soon as there is any resistance felt stop turning the prop, and
open the two bottom cylinders,and allow time for the oil to drain, do
NOT rush. Once the oil has stopped draining then you MUST screw the
plugs back in!!! Then pull another full set of blades, I usually pull 16
blades. And if there any resistance, then you need to stop and remove
the plugs again. Allow time for the oil to drain.....do NOT RUSH.
As soon as you can pull your blades and there is no resistance then
you are ready to fly.
There are options, like and oil shut off valve that allows you to shut
the oil off after you have stopped the engine, and this valve has a
switch that will cut the ignition circuit so you cannot start the engine
with out the oil valve being open. Part of the kit is a oil pump to pump
the engine empty. The danger here is the mounting of the oil valve could
damage the oil tank.
It does not take a lot of oil to cause a lock, I have not worked it
out but I would guess that 100 ml will be enough. What ever the accurate
figure is, it is not a lot.

David....look at the cooling fins on the cylinder......next to the
base of the cylinder.......if the last 2 fins are the same size in
diameter, it is a 260 hp. engine. If the last fin is smaller than the
second to the last, it is a 285 hp. engine. P.S. Did you ever find a

Also of note a 260 hp cyl should not be used on a 285 hp engine, but the
reverse is OK. This from a Chinese mech. Parts book alludes to this via a
serial/batch number spread but is not very specific.
