Subject: | YAK55M modifications |
Dear YAK friends,
I just bought a few months ago a YAK55M with a MT V 9 250 prop here in
Europe.
With this prop the clearance with the ground is quite small so my question
is:
I have seen a few 55 with Cleveland wheels and brakes or Matco with bigger
wheels (500-6 or 600-6) and also landing gear extension to increase the
lenght of the gear;
so who can give me a contact of a company or somebody doing or selling
this modification?
Do you gain some weight with this modification compare to the std russian
brakes & wheels?
Another questions:
I have seen some russian YAK55M partly modified like a SP55M ;new
ailerons, elevator & rudder turtle deck & fairings but still with the std
gear.
Is it possible to get this parts ailerons etc...?
Many thanks for the infos
Happy loopings

I suspect that your undercarriage has slightly bent which will reduce
the clearace a bit.
There should be no problem to fly with a 250 prop.
You can remove the gear and reset it to restore the correct hight.

I use Royco #43 Pneumatic system grease.
I believe MolyKote 55M is compitabile as well.

Cliff is spot on, glycerin is a humectant (attracts water) and so is
alcohol. I have posted about this in the past. I have used glycerin
mixed 30% with alcohol (70%) in the past and it seems to work well.

OK....I'll throw my hat into this ring.
The Yakovlev pneumatic system is a *greased* system, not an oiled one.
The assemblies and valves are to be dis-assembled and re-greased every
500hrs or 5 years (whichever occurs first).
There has been many a witches brew suggested to inject into the system-
ie. air tool oil.
This has the effect of washing the grease out of the system.
Washing the grease out of the flap and gear selectors puts the two
rotating plates in direct contact causing scoring and ..... leakage.
The 90% alcohol / Glycerin mix injected into the air bottles is to glom
onto the engine oil and water that makes it past the filter to reduce
the incidence of corrosion.
If you're operating in high humidity areas, then I'd change the alcohol/
glycerin mix and regrease the system more often.

What I think of that (since you asked) is that you need to be very very
careful of what you add to Russian pneumatic systems.
My first exposure to the YAK List about a decade or so again was when I
read about putting all manner of things into the pneumatic system to
prevent rust in actuators. I did exactly as was suggested. The next
thing that happened is that the Chevron Seals in my YAK-50 landing gear
actuators actually dissolved. By the grace of God I managed to get the
gear down with the emergency system. I then wrote my first long article
on how to go about pulling the landing gear actuators and replacing the
seals in a YAK-50.
I did not follow any manuals like Doug Sapp is recommending. Instead I
followed the advice given on the Yak List. In this particular case,
that advice turned out to be less than good. Be careful of what you
add to Russian pneumatic systems. WHAT you add and HOW MUCH you add.
What is "good stuff" for preventing rust, can sometimes be BAD JU-JU for
rubber seals.

It has been suggested to clean the air bottle and put some acf50 or
similar rust preventative in. What do you think of that?

Bill,
The CJ Tech Spec manual goes into detail about how much oil to ad= d
and where it should be added. -I am not close to my books now or
would = look it up for you.
A word of caution. -Do not s= quirt oil into the filter on the
compressor, you are just flushing junk int= o the compressor and you
will end up gumming up the poppet valve.
Also, do not over do the amount of oil you add to the s= ystem.
-Keeping the system DRY is of equal or greater importance than
kee= ping it oiled. -Check your manuals and add
the-recommended-amount of = oil or oil
and-glycerin-mix. -
Many of the actuators which I have been-getting-in = to
overhaul or as exchanges for new units have little or no grease left in
= them because it has all been washed out by the addition of light
weight oil= s to the pneumatic system. -Without grease to
lubricate the locking balls= and the 0 rings the actuator will
self-destruct in a very short time.

You can also check you main gear "toe" alignment. I have seen some 55's with toe
out which will result in spreading the gear, making for reduced prop clearance

Cliff, this is an interesting question.
My YAK-50 was converted to Cleveland wheels AND brakes (hydraulic) when
it was down in Texas after it first arrived in the U.S. in the early
90's. I can take pictures of mine, but I was wondering if you have a
standard kit? It would seem that what would work on a 55, might also
work on any other single seat YAK, or possibly the 52, although that
would be a REAL pain if dual brakes was an option.
Point being, a lot of folks have wanted to duplicate my Hyd Brake and
Cleveland wheel setups and I have not really been able to help them
other than to send pictures. You have a KIT?

*Mark,
George developed a Hydraulic wheels and brake conversion kit and service
bulletin to install Cleveland wheels and brakes into the Yak-52 (see
attached).
We haven't received a lot of demand for this conversion.
As such, we didn't make a production run of the lower axle forgings. The
one-off price was pretty steep.
To make it reasonable, we'd need to do at least five sets.
The rest of the kit is off-the-shelf items.
Give George a shout for more info.
Cheers!

Mark,
George developed a Hydraulic wheels and brake conversion kit and service
bulletin to install Cleveland wheels and brakes into the Yak-52 (see
Cheers!

Please contact me off list.

Dear YAK friends,
I just bought a few months ago a YAK55M with a MT V 9
250 prop here in Europe.
With this prop the clearance with the ground is quite
small so my question is:
I have seen a few 55 with Cleveland wheels and brakes
or Matco with bigger wheels (500-6 or 600-6) and also landing gear
extension to increase the lenght of the gear;
so who can give me a contact of a company or somebody
doing or selling this modification?
Do you gain some weight with this modification compare
to the std russian brakes & wheels?
Another questions:
I have seen some russian YAK55M partly modified like a
SP55M ;new ailerons, elevator & rudder turtle deck & fairings but still
with the std gear.
Is it possible to get this parts ailerons etc...?
Many thanks for the infos
Happy loopings

I converted my first CJ to Clevelands, and yes it is spendy especially if
you go with new Double puck Cleveland wheels and brakes rather than used.
I
had over 3K invested in mine not counting my time. If anyone is looking I
do know where there is a set of CJ Clevelands with lower legs (were put on
in Texas) which the customer took off and went back to pneumatics.
Best,
Doug
