Hi All, I am aware this has been discussed before, but as the problem now effects my own airplane, I have am a bit more attentive... I have a Yak 55M with an auto-plug conversion. The conversion has been in place for about 3 years now (roughly 400 hours). I am now getting RF interference picked up in the Briz radio from the mags/plug wires. At least I assume that is the source, as it is RPM dependent. It has been present since installation, but has been gradually getting worse over the past year or so. I assume that there is a shielding issue either at the mag connection or along the wires somewhere. My question to you is where should I start to look at trouble shooting this issue, and how do I go about fixing it (shy of completely replacing the plug wires, which I'd prefer not to do... But will do if need be...)? Any thoughts you might have on the matter would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott Poehlmann Yak 55M N155YK

Could the tach generator be an issue? Also wondering if the dielectric properties of the plug wires are changing due to long term heat exposure. Scott, This is one of the most difficult things to find/resolve. A couple of possibilities: How did you determine it is RF interference, i.e. is it picked up by the antenna or via the power line?? Is the interference opening the squelch? This can easily be checked by disconnecting the antenna and connecting a small 50 Ohm dummyload. If it is picked up by the antenna it will be a real problem to resolve (assuming all the shielding of the plugs wiring etc is OK), not to say almost impossible without redesigning the radio w.r.t. grounding, internal decoupling etc. If it is picked up on the power leads it is easier to prevent by using a filter in the powerline. Ask Dennis for contact details of a company, I think in Texas, who makes those filters suitable for use in aeroplanes. The interesting thing y're saying however is "it got worse over time" if that is the case I would check the shielding of the RPM-generator first. If, over time, the shielding has been damaged you can be sure it will generate a lot of noise on the radio which increases or decreases with the rpm. Hope this will help you a little. We have installed these magneto filters on the P-leads http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/lsMagFilter.php, mounting them on one of the studs of the round accessory case cover. They have worked quite well and are easily installed by removing the P lead and de-soldering the shield and wire from the P-lead "button", installing a terminal lung on the P lead wire and connecting it to the mag filter. Then install a terminal lug on the mag filter wire and soldering it to the P-lead button. For additional noise attenuation, we have also installed this noise filter directly on the DC line to the affected unit. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/lsStrobeNoiseEl.php. There are larger noise filters with higher current ratings that could be used on the DC bus. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/lonestarFilter70amp.php. Ant, You can make your life a lot simpler regarding the external air fill port by installing a Schrader valve fitting (http://www.mcmaster.com/#schrader-valves/6ydc), part number 8063K31, on the cover. Remove the valve core because it is not needed. It's a 1/8 NPT Schrader valve fitting. Drill and tap the center of the cover plate. Put a small amount of epoxy around the threads when installing the Schrader valve to prevent leaks. Then you can use a simple Schrader valve coupler attached to the hose going to an air tank, http://www.aircraft-tool.com/shop/detail.aspx?PRODUCT_ID=SK2043C, and you'll never have to find a Russian adapter again. By installing the Schrader valve fitting on the cover, you can still remove the cover and use a Russian fitting. Hope this helps. I mixed 6 oz for every 15 gallons and used it for years and years. If I'm not mistaken, it's the stated mixture amount on the label. Interpolate when topping off the tanks. And it does work well and does seem to prevent sticking valves. Subject: Weight & Balance
Our Yak 52 has a weight and balance that says one would be out of the aerobatic envelope if one person is flying from the front seat with full fuel. Can this be right? Other concerns about our current weight & balance: 1) There are 49 pounds difference between the Left Main and Right Main weights. Is this normal? Seems like a lot to me. 2) Are the forward and aft limits quoted, 15% MAC and 25% MAC, correct? 3) The conversions from MAC to inches is stated as -6.77 to -12.91 inches (aft of the datum which is frame No. 5, the main spar attachment) for normal category and -6.77 to -9.36 inches for aerobatic category. Are these conversions done correctly? 4) Why was it weighed with 29 lbs weight on radio rack behind rear seat? Is this the correct way to weight a Yak 52? Also, does anyone have any advice on how to do a new weight and balance? thomas_csmith@yahoo.com

Check the shielding on your Tac Generator. That is the most likely source for RPM related noise. Doc -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Scott Poehlmann Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2010 5:07 AM Subject: Yak-List: RF interference Hi All, I am aware this has been discussed before, but as the problem now effects my own airplane, I have am a bit more attentive...

How about those Liberace inspired exhaust stacks? On Dec 16, 2010, at 9:41 AM, George Coy wrote: > The new Chinese L-7 prototype is getting ready to fly. It is a > Chinese version of the Yak-152. It has a Romanian M`14P and an MT > propeller. > <L7 airplane.jpg>

Boy she has a little bit of everything in her. Looks like she may have plain flaps. She may not have ejection seat but what can be called extraction seats. When activated, a small charge extends a telescoping pole out high enough to clear the tail. The chute is than deployed and than fully opens. At which point it pulls the pilot out of the seat, up the pole, and freed of f the end of it. I think I read that system was certified for inverted fl ight down to 200'. The nose gear fork does not look like a casting but formed plate. The wings have a lot of dihedral (compared to a 52) maybe 3 to 5 degrees and is something other than a Clark Y. Looking at the tip airfoil, it lo oks like a 4422 and I think the root area looks like a 2300 series. I can be wrong. The landing gear looks like she'll be fully retracted, but looks puny to me. It does have a lot of shock tube showing though. Can't tell but the flight controls may be all medal - at least the rudder appears so. You sure tell by the vertical stab its got a lot Russian in it. Boy I love to see this up close. I don't care for the side opening canopy ( I like to fly with mine open a lot). Bet she'll make a great trainer.
