Has anyone had their Yak-52 IFR certified and, if so, I'd appreciate what avionics
were used and your opinion on tbe upgraded aircraft as an IFR trainer.

A few observations about that:
The Yak-52 is a pretty stable instrument platform. It also has a nice full panel
of instruments (assuming stock). I used both of mine for instrument currency.
When I got the first one, I asked the local FSDO what my options were, and other
than the basic requirements (pitot static and transponder checks), you have
a lot of leeway in an experimental aircraft. For example, you can use a non-panel
mounted, non-IFR certified, non TSO'd GPS as your sole means of navigation.
It's mostly about what's required for the procedure you're flying.
Having said this, keep in mind that you'll have a lot of rope with which to hang
yourself. Legal doesn't always mean safe or advisable. For one thing, if you
don't have one of the modern variations of the Yak-52, you won't have the range
to go anywhere, then to your alternate, and 45 mins. after that. That would
be different if you had more range, of course. With my 30 gals of fuel, I used
it for currency and as a get out of jail free card in case I got surprised,
which fortunately never happened. I never used it for trips in hard IFR.
IFR trainer with a safety pilot, nit flying in actual? Works great for that!
