The engineering workshop which maintains my Yak-18T recently purchased some brake
pads to fit my aircraft and others. They are at least 1mm too thick. They are
finding it impossible to fit the brake pad assembly into the brake drum. I
think I was told the same problem will be experienced on Yak-52 (and other Yak)
aircraft they maintain as the brakes are the same.
Is that correct? Yak-18T and -52 and -50 brakes are all the same?
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
I'm currently experiencing weak brakes and I'm told I need new pads. Anyone got
some known-to-be-good regular thickness brake pads for sale?

Subject: | Re: Yak brake pads |
Yes, the Yak 52 and Yak 50 are basically the same. So are the Nanchang
CJ6 brake pads.
I ran into this once before when I replaced a set of pads and installed
new brake drums at the same time. The first set of new drums were
thicker (inside diameter was smaller). I discussed this with Doug Sapp,
our outstanding CJ6 parts guru, since the drums on the CJ are
interchangeable with the Yak 52. What Doug found was there actually are
some "undersized" brake drums (smaller inside diameter) and I apparently
got 2 of them. Doug exchanged the two new ones I had for two other new
drums with a slightly larger ID and that solved the problem.
As for the weak brakes, assuming the brake pads meet the minimum
thickness specification, if the felt grease seal in the rear of the
brake drum assembly is broken or missing, the grease from the rear
bearing spreads by centrifugal force out over the brake pads. Evidence
of grease on the brake pads is glazed brake pads and very shinny "hot
spot" on the inside of the brake drum and brake dust caked grease around
the metal back plate behind the rear bearing. The glazed brake pads
will definitely cause the feel of weak brakes.
The solution is to remove the brake pads and wash them in avgas as avgas
or automotive brake cleaner as will this will not leave an oily residue
on the pads. Also wash the inside of the brake drum. Clean the greasy
brake dust from the brake assembly. Lightly sand the brake pads with
60-80 grit sandpaper to refresh the pads and reinstall. Finally, be
absolutely certain to install new felt grease seals in both the front
and rear of the brake drum assembly.
Hope this helps,
Dennis

Thanks Eric. Have used Bruce's a few times now, last lot took about 3

on a You Tube Video, may have been the UK somewhere, can't recall.

I just got my cover from Bruce for my CJ. They told me two weeks but it took four.
I did order it the same week as Sun-N-Fun though, and they told me they got
a lot of orders at that time and that was the reason for the delay.

The 52 cowls can be fitted on the 50,but neither can be put on the 18T whose
cowls significantly wider at the rear.

No need to apologize RIchard. I know nothing about 18's.
My comment... poorly written as it was, was meant to say: "There is no difference
between 50 and 52 cowls".
Sorry for the confusion! Thanks for the correction.

Tom,
No, balance is will be wrong. Also, there is no real advantage, valves &
bore are same size, only exhaust nuts are larger. One advantage is sodium
cooled exhaust valve which can be overcome by using modern high temp alloy
valves.

I've ordered a couple of covers from them and it was more like a week or so to
get them. I just called Adam at Bruce's and he said because of your circumstances
(no hangar all of a sudden), he could bump you up in production to under 2
weeks. I'll forward his email to you off list in case you're interested.
