A specialized company is trying to make two prototypes of a new mag coil
for me. I gave them three original Russian coils for measurement and reverse
engineering.
As expected, this is much more difficult than it looks. There are more than
13000 windings on the secondary, made from a very thin wire. The specialist
who's studying it presumes that it may have been wired BY HAND.
Since the wire is so thin, the normal procedures of impregnating with resin
(or more modern insulation products) under high pressure is not evident.
Although this company is very well equiped, they will have to subcontract
the winding of the coil. Because it is so thin, the wire will be expensive
and rather difficult to find. But we'll manage that.
The Russians (and the Chinese I suppose) applied a separate insulation layer
after each two layers of windings! You can imagine the work.
We did not find an internal capacitor, but there's a tiny aluminum plate,
that connects one end of the primary and the secondary winding. Since it
can't be soldered, it is simply wound a few turns around this very small
aluminium part.
As soon as I have the prototypes (this will take some time) I'd liked to
test run them, if still allowed to fly. Otherwise I might ask for volunteers
in the free world at the other side of the ocean.
Maybe at the end I'll have to conclude that this project is not economically
viable, but at least I'll have the design data of the coil.
Best regards,
Jan

Great to hear Etienne. The owner of these tanks sitting in the back of my hanger
has not made his mind up yet. So I will tell him that the chance is gone for
him.
Glad to hear you have your tanks back and you are flying again.
I've been busy chasing miss fire in the 50. Has to be FOD introduced into the induction
system for it to be migratory like it is. So looks like I'm replacing
an engine.
Does not end does it.

Has anyone ever experimented with modifying the supercharger ratio on the
CJ6?
I've read the Chinese produced 'some' higher power versions of the HS6
radial engine, anyone care to guess how they did this?

Does anyone have a (working) used attitude indicator they'd be willing to
part with?
Contact me off list if so.

The gas gun I brought from Bill Blackwell. I believe it had been built
for the Tora Tora movie and never used. To me its a little to heavy and at
OSH last year I saw a simpler and lighter one, I want to try.
The shackles I designed and made myself. They are made out of square
aluminum tubing that is pop riveted together. Very light only about 3 lbs.
They bolt on to the wing using the same bolts as the wing tank cover plate.
I ran a push pull cable, though the leading edge to the cockpit. It took
two days to build and install. I can remove or install the shackles in
about 20 mins.
Bombs I made were replicas of Jap Type 97 GPs. These were about 4 feet
long and 10 in diameter. Made of Styrofoam and covered with fiber glass.
The fins were made of soft aluminum flashing. Total weight was less than 8
lbs. When dropped they flew perfect and looked so real - - its was unreal.
They did slow the airplane down about 10 kts. When they hit the ground
they'd bust up some but could be rebuilt.
That's has been a lot of fun learning how to drop them! The whole idea
started as an act for a warbird airshow. Who knows - - - -maybe someday.

I have not personally seen a set up like Hal's before. A rear louver
system was produced on the 52TWs and 52Ws. I remember some the guys had a few
bugs for a while. Aerodynamic & operational wise I'm not convinced they
are any better. I'm of the old school where you don't go to something new
unless what you have is worn out and needs to be replaced. Than spend the
time and money on the new idea.
An inverted oil system is do able. There is plenty of room under the
cowl. Running a vent line to the tail, while it sound "clean" (unless you run
it externally on the skin- yuk! ) the number of bulkheads and spar web you
would need to transverses makes it a complicated task.
Under the cowl you might use a modified Yak 52 system. The oil tank would
need to modified with a oil pick up point on the top of the tank somewhere
and a ball slid tube and "T" inserted in the feed line somewhere.
All this is a do able project, which I contemplated at length one time.
My decision not to, was based on the only 4 facts as I SEE them.
1. The CJ is not a good design (was not meant to be) for extended inverted
flight.
2. I do not do extended inverted flight.
3. The short inverted flight that I do - do, not that much oil goes
overboard.
4. I rather spend the money on petrol.
BTAIM, that is the great thing our airplanes in the Experimental /
Exposition cat. We can carry out our dreams and ideas to make a better mouse
trap
or at least one that has our mark on it. Me? I put on a gas machine gun
and bomb shackles that work. (Plus I have a neat looking gun sight)

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the following on a CJ:
1. A "closed" cowling mod like the one on Hal Morely's CJ with some sort
of rear louvers.
2. An inverted oil tank system or taking the stock tank vent and running
it to the rear of the airplane.
Thank you,
