If I recall on neither a Housai or M14 does oil lubricate the generator splines
or bearings. They are on their own. But I thought there was some difference
in the oil seal on a Housai vs an M14? Blackwell would know for sure.
As for flashing the generator, first you get up high on the wing and the you gotta

In order to "flash the field" you momentarily connect the field terminal on
the generator to the positive lead on the battery. (Assuming negative ground
that is.) This causes full battery voltage to flow through the field. The
result is that the pole-pieces in the field take on a low-level permanent
magnetism. This allows the generator to be self-exciting.

I think it was some sort of malevolent Chinese device designed to prevent any camera
in its vicinity from focusing.
