G'Day all,
We are resurrecting a engine for the YAK.
I would like to replace the gearbox, cylinder, and other nuts with Stainless
Steel.
Are the original nuts high tensile?
Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

Bill
Swift is not likely to be cheaper than 100 LL. The FAA and EPA are on boar
d but the fuel certification process has never been done before for non-gas
oline fuel, so that policy is having to be created from scratch. While this i
s government at it's worst, it is moving forward and will happen within a ye
ar or so. 500,000 gallons have just been contracted to produce by a petroleu
m firm but will not be available to the public yet. Bio sources will be phas
ed in. It's all about the investors source of base product. A company with n
atural gas Or sorghum plants will each be able to pay for the proprietary ch
emical process to make Swift and sell it. Very flexible. There are operation
al changes one must make to use Swift fuel: it burns longer in the ignition c
ycle than 100LL . The mixture must be leaned even during takeoff power but t
he detonation margin is so much higher than 100LL that there is no problem. E
xhaust is a bit sooty if not leaned properly. When you are exclusively burni
ng Swift, you will advance the timing by 3 degrees to get a better burn. At 1
00LL settings, you get 98.5% power with Swift fuel, but 15% more range. It w
eighs one pound more per gallon. CHT is cooler and EGT is hotter by 50 degre
es.
It is easily mixable with 100LL. I have been testing this in my Sukhoi. A
utomixture is requiring some adjustment of carb settings, which takes time. I
can't tell the difference between 100LL and a 50:50 mixture with Swift from
a performance standpoint. We use a jpi engine analyzer, bore scoping, compre
ssion checks, and oil analysis to monitor as much as we can while I collate a
ll the performance numbers.
=46rom what I have seen, I am very pumped up about it. I wish I had a manual
mixture control and may go to a fuel injection unit to make this easier, th
ough these units are not working well yet.
Lycoming and Continental are now involved. An engine can eventually be built
up with higher compression to take advantage of the huge detonation margin.
You ask what you can do. Your interest is exceptional and in the minority. M
ost pilots are not convinced there is a problem. Public support or at least a
wareness is the best place to help.

chomping at the bit. I really don't like Government what can the people not
going Oshkosh do to help? I also read that AOPA was considering a Backing a
manufacturer using unleaded car gas with additives, I like the American com
pany making a fuel from bio and all on American soil.

I'm guessing there isn't a stainless substitute with the strength
needed.

I would not recommend using SS nuts on the engine. Particularly on the
cylinder base nuts.
