Subject: | engine running rough |
Good morning,
I discovered my engine (M14P) showing the following characteristic:
It's not the smoothest engine I've seen but running ok from start. Then I
fly for some 30 minutes, have a break and when I go flying again, the engine
runs with quite more vibrations than before. It's not the frequent shakes
that I remember from an engine with a magneto coil turning bad. It's just
running evenly with noticeable more vibes than the flight before which
develops through the complete RPM range with peaks at certain RPM. This
behaviour is shown consistently every flying day.
So far I checked the mag timing being at 15.5 BTDC and synchronous, the
breaker gaps are correct, the plugs gaps are correct and the plugs tested.
Any ideas where to look now? All recommendations will be greatly
appreciated.
Cheers,
Armin

Now I would check the fuel system.
All filters, pump, leaks and so on
Then carburetor....but this is a whole complex story.
Didier
PostScriptum : We had also this kind of problem (motor working roughly
passing a certain RPM and it could go up to a total stop) with dammaged
hoses...

Armin,
Try to pay particular attention to determine it is "engine roughness or vibration"...
particularly when there are no engine instruments indicating trouble.
Roughness comes and goes whereas vibration is steady but may change or go away
at a different rpm setting.
What type/brand of spark plugs are you using?
Check for ignition lead misfire too... this can be caused by a faulty lead, faulty
connection at spark plug, or electrode pin not making contact with conductor
causing terminal well flashover.
Did you just fixed a magneto coil problem?.... When magneto coils go bad, they
usually break down when hot... the engine runs smoothly until a half hour into
flight before it gets rough... the next day, when the coil has cooled down, the
engine operates fine. The magneto will test fine on a test bench.
Propeller out of track or unbalanced?... out of balance propellers or harmonic
engine vibrations often result in cracks in spinners and engine baffling.
Also an intake leak could cause some roughness at high throttle settings because
the cylinders nearer to the leak might be getting less fuel air mix than those
further away. It doesn't take leaks in each intake pipe to ruin combustion.
A large enough leak in one place can ruin combustion in all the cylinders.

Recently there was a request regarding numbers of yak 18 T aircraft around
the world.
. Did we ever come to a number?
. Do we know whether any of these aircraft are flying IFR, or are
all of them very far aircraft?

Also take a look at the rubber engine mount bushings. If deteriorated as
evidence of cracking around the exposed part, (the part you can see
easily) they need to be replaced. As with any aircraft engine, bad
engine mount rubber bushings will definitely contribute to engine
vibrations.

This is a update from Doug and Kathleen to all our RPA, RAF, Back Country
pilots and Supercub.org friends. I hope to buy everyone of you a beer,
shake your hand, and personally tell you thanks for all of your phone calls,
offers of help with the salvage, offers of rides back home to Omak, your
many letters, emails, cards, fruit baskets and home cooked meals delivered
to our door by many of our local flying friends and RPA members. Thank you,
every one of you. We are truly blessed to be counted in the number of the
folks you all call friends.
As many of you know as a result of the accident in our cub, Kathleen and I
both have badly compressed and fractured vertebrae, broken ribs and some
stitches. At this point the stitches are out and the ribs have just about
healed. Our backs are still a long way from mended and we are still in
upper body braces. We are told that it will be another 6-8 months before
we are back to "close to normal".
Special thanks to our very good friends Hal Morley and Laura Long, who
watched over us from the moment the emergency folks at Kalispell Regional
whould let them in to see us. Laura took us into her beautiful home,
pampered us and made us feel like family, a few days later they arranged for
a Angel Flight aircraft to take us back to Omak. They are true friends,
guardian angels in fact, I honestly do not know how we can ever repay them.
Thanks also to all the folks from the RAF (Recreational Aviation Foundation)
who worried over us every literally day in the hospital and continue to
check on us via email and phone calls now that we are at home recovering.
Kathleen and I had been members only 24 hours when the accident happened,
yet we were treated like life time members. We will forever be grateful for
the care and attention they gave us, both in getting us out of the wreckage,
and the continued well wishes and show of support. This is an outstanding
group of folks with a very worthwhile mission, if you have a interest in
back country flying you should look into the RAF.
The show of support and concern from the RPA membership has been heart
warming indeed. We have received literally hundreds of calls, emails, fruit
baskets, prepared meals, and personal visits from members of our CJ and Yak
community. I cannot start to tell you how much this means to Kathleen and
me. Very humbling indeed, thank you all very much.
We are in the office most days, shipping most every day @ 9:00 am PST, so
contrary to some stories we are not closed, we are indeed open for business.
If we don't answer the phone we are most likely in Spokane for rehab.
Please leave a message on the voice mail, we will return all calls as soon
as we return.
Again, thank you all for your support.
All the best from Omak, still Yakin,
Doug and Kathleen

Apologies for the repeat post (lost email).
Does anyone have good quality GIF/JPG files of the chinese
airforce insignia they could forward off-list?
If anyone is interested, Transport Canada states that the decals are
"24" in height by 59" in length to be displayed on sides and top of
the right wing and bottom of the left wing with the same dimension."
I guess they did their homework....
Thanks,

Interesting. TC certainly does specify minimum dimensions and other details
for registration marks.
They assuredly do not specify PLAAF, or any other military or countries
markings, dimensions, or any other information.
Where are you located. I have a "pounce" pattern for the insignia if you
can't find anything else. In Oliver, BC.
