Reno... I am not only saddened by this tragic event.... I never expected anything like this accident to happen. There is still uncertainty of what actually went wrong, some early conclusions say that a trim tab on the left elevator was torn loose and fluttering. At nearly 500 mph in a high G turn stick forces must be quite heavy. Loss of the trim tab and unequal airflow could have caused the pilot to roll inverted and lose control as he pulled back hard on the stick after declaring a MayDay and pulling up out of the race. Things happen real fast at 450+ MPH and only 1000 ft from the stands. Looks like Jimmy used what little control he had left to try to miss the crowd. A great pilot who will be remembered and missed. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all injured and all those traumatized by this accident. My thoughts, prayers for all the families that lost someone. Contact me off list. We have a stainless steel mod to correct this problem. You can use this mod ONLY if the valve in your QL-17 snot valve is the type which is NOT welded to the bottle. Give me a call 509-826-4610.
