Subject: | Re: CJ-6 Panel Compass |
Thanks everyone for the advice. I really enjoy that old Chinese compass. Lot
of nostalgia there. Id like to keep it. Dont want to inop it or update the compass
in front and rear if there is a fix. Has anyone had a problem with the
junction box(EX-2)? How about the inverter? If the inverter isnt functioning
well, could it result in the compass not rotating without causing problems with
the artificial horizon? Otherwise, Im still looking for bad connections or
loose wires.

Another place to check, in the power distribution box behind the pilots
seat is a selenium rectifier. they do tend to fail with age. Have one
of your electronics friends replace it with a modern silicon bridge
rectifier. I don't have the schematic here but it is involved in the
compass.

Looking at the schematics, the selenium rectifier is associated with the
VHF transceiver, not the gyro compass. I don't think that would help his
problem.
Of all the systems in the CJ6A, the slaved gyro compass is far-and-away the
most complex. Once it dies it really is time to go in a different
direction. You can get rid of an amazing amount of weight by punting the
gyro compass and replacing it with something solid-state.
