Dear Listers, As of today, Contributions to the Matronics List Fund Raiser are lagging behind last year at this time by roughly 20%. I have a Fund Raiser each year simply to cover my operating costs for the Lists. I *do not* accept any advertising income to support the Lists and rely solely on the Contributions of members to keep the expenses paid. I run all of my own servers and they are housed here locally, and the Internet connection is a commercial-grade, T1 connection with public address space. I also maintain a full backup system that does nightly backups of all List-related data so that in the event of a server crash, all of the Lists and the many years of List archive data could be restored onto a new server in a matter of hours. All of this costs a fair amount of money, not to mention a significant amount of my personal time. I have a Fund Raiser each year to cover these costs and I ask that members that feel they receive a benefit from my investments make a modest Contribution each year to support the continued operation and upgrade of these services. If you enjoy the Lists, please make a Contribution today. I also offer some incentive gifts for larger Contribution levels. At the Contribution Web Site, you can use a credit card, Paypal, or personal check to show your support for the continuation of these services: http://www.matronics.com/contribution Or, drop a personal check in the mail to: Matt Dralle / Matronics 581 Jeannie Way Livermore CA 94550 Thank you for your support! From: "Bitterlich, Mark G CIV Det Cherry Point, MALS-14 64E" Having nothing to do with this in particular ... Let me tell everyone THIS story. >From direct experience, be aware that the U.S. FAA reads this list. Most people will say: "So What?" and by and large that is true, and in a court of law, if you pay the legal fees, you can win in that regard. However, the FAA considers LIST postings to be "Statements Made in Public". This is in my mind pretty much B/S, but it is what they are saying. Trust me on this. That said, a long time ago "a friend of mine" put on his medical form before a flight physical that he had once had a kidney stone. Well, the proverbial horse manure hit the fan. He had to go get a CT scan to prove he was stone free. Since there was no current medical malady, this was not covered under insurance. He then had to go to a Urologist and get a signed statement saying he was "totally stone free", and this was no simple matter either. This gent had ONE kidney stone in his entire life... after spending a year in Desert Storm by the way. Imagine that. It gets worse. Every time that same gent went for a medical after that, the "Doc" wanted the same procedures repeated. Worst of all, checks with FAA medical authorities confirmed that this is "standard procedure". I would be the last man ever to suggest telling anything but the truth while getting an FAA Flight Physical. That can be a problem and kidney stones are one of the worst. So this should be a warning to never, EVER have a kidney stone. Make sure you never have anything wrong that the FAA will give you grief over. But you can be preemptive in some cases. It can be pricy but perhaps worth it. My heart exhibits premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) when at rest. It causes my heart to appear to "skip a beat" on a regular basis. Under exercise my heart rate increases and the PVC's go away. I have had this for over 20 years. My father has had it for 50. But last year my doctor took notice of it and decided to do a nuclear study of my heart. The result was that the software in the scanner determined that I had a low ejection fraction (heart output) that turned out to be triggered by averaging the output, but including the PVC beats that had little or no output. So now with a formal test showing insufficient ejection fraction I had to prove that I wasn't in danger of dying in the next three minutes. (The doctor did take notice that I was riding my bike on a 35mi route every couple of days to and from work. :-) The result was two stress tests, a Holter monitor, and two echocardiograms, one of which was a stress echocardiogram. (OK, I wanna see YOU run you ass off on the the tread mill, jump off, lie down, and hold YOUR breath while they scan your heart with the ultrasonic imager!) And all of this was to make sure that I could prove to the FAA that I really, truly have no cardiac problem. I did this preemptively at a cost of over $25,000, of which only 50% was picked up by my insurance, just so that I could present the whole thing, fait accompli, to the medical examiner when going for my 3rd-class medical. Everything that was done was done at the suggestion of AOPA's medical advisory service. It worked, the examiner wrote the medical certificate on the spot and the FAA never came back and questioned me. Still, it was a pain in the ass AND the wallet. -- Brian Lloyd, WB6RQN/J79BPL 3191 Western Dr. Cameron Park, CA 95682 brian@lloyd.com +1.767.617.1365 (Dominica) +1.916.877.5067 (USA) ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 10:56:17 AM PST US Subject: Re: Yak-List: Fw: How to start a CJ6 at -16.
