Subject: Re: Yak 52 (TW?) Fatal Crash in New Zealand
From: "Etienne Verhellen" <janie@yak52.fr>
This is the accident report of the Yak-52 accident caused by a screwdriver in the UK in January 2003 : http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/dft_avsafety_pdf_024587.pdf The investigation into the fatal accident to this Yak 52 established that the elevator control quadrant (as illustrated in the picture -see report above) was jammed by a screwdriver. The aircraft was carrying out aerobatics, and at the end of a stall turn (Hammerhead) the pilot was unable to pull out of the vertical dive. Following this tragic accident, all UK registered Yak-52 have to be fitted with a FOD barrier (MPD 2004-06) : http://www.yakuk.com/MPD2004-006.pdf It is common practice for pilots to check for loose articles by slapping the underside of the rear fuselage. Such slapping will only show up objects in the front part of the rear fuselage; the Yak-52 structure is such that anything which may have migrated through the frames right to the rear will not be disturbed by such slapping. While the slapping technique is still an efficient means of finding some loose objects, nothing can replace a full loose article check with a torch and mirror through the inspection hatch in the fuselage side. -------- http://www.flyforfun.be/?q=yaks http://www.planecheck.com/eu/index.asp?ent=dv&id=6711 http://www.airshowactionphotography.com/san07/page1.html http://www.irishairpics.com/photo/1029467/L/Yakovlev-Yak-52/G-CBSS/Etienne-Verhellen/ Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=365862#365862
