I owned an I-3 for a summer. Took it in on partial trade for a CJ that I restored back before I got into this business. I liked the plane, for what it was designed for - hard core acro. It is a very capable aerobatic plane as previously pointed out. It is typical Russian, i.e. very utilitarian, and lacks the fit and finish of western counterparts. The plane is what I would define as "medium difficulty" to land as a tail dragger. Not a PT-22, but not a Decathalon, either. 400HP motor is nice, but also more maintenance intensive and lower TBO. This is a good local aerobatic plane with plenty of opportunity to grow into the advanced category with, but it is a bit on the ugly side, support is virtually nonexistent for the the airframe, and cross country's are a painful venture as maintaining straight and level flight effortlessly was one of the designer's last concerns. If you want to pull hard and do that macho outside stuff, this plane is a cheap way to get that. If you are looking for something to do formation, acro, and a bit of cross country in, the Yak and CJ are both far better options, in my opinion. It's wonderfully nice to have the symmetrical wing. If you delight in sustained inverted flight and effortless rolls, enjoy the challenge of outside maneuvers and a steady diet of gyroscopic figures, you will enjoy the I-3 enough to forget the negatives. If your aerobatic desires are limited to "warbird aerobatics", you would appreciate the traits of the CJ or Yak 52 more. My sister and I arre putting together a celebration and Na vy-style send-off for him on the 26th of May in McGregor, Iowa. (See attach ed link). I'm trying to put together a missing man flyover for The Commande r for the 26th, Saturday. His hometown is beautiful, on the bluffs on the M ississippi River. The Natives are friendly, the beer is cold and the cheese curds are...plentiful. I want to extend an invitation to all in the Red St ar Community, especially the ones in the Midwest, to come and fly. I can't promise much more than a tank of gas, discounted fuel prices (maybe) and ex cellent hospitality. Plus some beautiful areas to do low-levels, far away f rom the prying eyes of Radar. Join me to celebrate the passing of one of Th e Greatest Generation, a combat Vet of WWII, Korea and VietNam.
