Hello. 28 volt LED replacements that fit directly are available from a US company
Bright Light LEDs. I don't have the full name or the spec readily at hand,
but if you search the Matronics list you will find all the details. And they
fit the CJ well and work without modification.
Cheers.
Coop.

Hi Gord,
Glad everything worked out for you.
A pre-takeoff checklist with verbal responses like 'Confirm Mags to
off', Verbal Response "Mags off"; 'Confirm Brakes Set', Verbal Response,
"Brakes SET" 'Confirm Main Air On', Verbal Response, "Main Air ON",
etc., etc., is the best way to prevent this from happening again.
Regarding the training class, it looks like we may have to push it out
toward the end of August due to other commitments. Like the weekend of
the 26th and 27th with me arriving the evening of the 25th. Check your
schedule and see if that would work for you and let me know.
Best regards,
Dennis

Snowballs are so easy to build. We probably all remember the Florida
Everglades L1011 and the swampy landing over a burnt out light bulb.
Yes one small error is usually the cause of major problems. I remember one
old grouch I used to fly with as a DC-9 co-pilot way back when. He had some
quirks that were not so bad in a safety sense. I always prayed the flight
attendant would not come in the cockpit during the initial cockpit check.
On one occasion it happened....over half way through the check. " Good
morning and what would your beverage of choice be on this bright and sunny
day?" she said. Grouch stopped the check, frowned, looked at me and gave me
the T sign, one finger on top of the other. I said "The Captain will have
tea and I will have a coffee thank you. She left and Grouch said. "Damn I
wish they wouldn't do that!!!" So we went back and started the check from
scratch again.
Looks like it is time for me to adopt this discipline.
Cheers,
Gord

Outstanding story Gord and most definitely appropriate.
Just because it is a much less complex airplane than say the DC9, it
doesn't mean there shouldn't be a preflight or pre start checklist. As
the story goes, just because it is a more simple airplane to fly doesn't
mean it can't kill you just as easily as a jet can. That's why we all
were taught to use checklists regardless of what airplane we are
flying. I too have become complacent sometimes too. But we all learn
from our mistakes. I know I do for sure.....even at my age. :-)

Dennis

Subject: | Re: LED replacements for the gear and tail lights |
This is some extra information from a prior posting. The superbrightleds
site has direct drop in replacements for every bulb except the landing
light. There is also a very nice wingtip nav / position / strobe LED
configuration and a flashing red beacon from AveoEngineering. Makes life
a little easier as they almost never need to be replaced.

The red beacon at the top of my vertical stabilizer and the wing tip nav
/ position / strobes on my CJ are from AveoEngineering. They are
LED-based, very bright, draw next to no power and will probably last
forever as they are in solid epoxy. You'll have to make a small aluminum
plate to cover the large hole each the wing tip, but that's very simple.
Here is a link:

veoFlashLP_Ultra/index.php
www.aveoengineering.com/Aviation/Airplane_LED_Lights/position_LED_lights/P
osiStrobe_MiniMax/index.php
Two of us at FFZ have AveoEngineering lights on our CJs.
There are also replacements for the small exterior Chinese bulb. It's 24
volt, LED cluster that has the same bayonet base. This would be a
direct, drop-in replacement for the lights on the nose gear, mains and
tail cone. This particular LED arrangement has viewing angle of 90
degrees, so it is brightest when seen from straight ahead. Here is where
I found this:
www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Dis
p=%2Fother_bulbs.htm
The web site navigation is a little confusing, but basically what you
would be looking for is the 24 volt, white, dual contact, single
intensity, 15 mm 1142 bayonet base. The ordering designation is:
1142-W15-24V White LED bulb - 24V. I've attached a picture of what this
looks like installed.
There are also smaller LEDs from the same web site that you can use to
replace the six interior landing gear indicator lights and the cockpit
interior lights.
I hope that this is helpful.

The company is SuperBright LED's. The Cockpit lamps are the BA9s series
and the tail light is in the BA15s series.

Hello. 28 volt LED replacements that fit directly are available from a US
company Bright Light LEDs. I don't have the full name or the spec readily
at hand, but if you search the Matronics list you will find all the details.
And they fit the CJ well and work without modification.
Cheers.

Just a word to the wise re cockpit bulb upgrades. Having spent years in the infantry,
you must be careful with bulb and color selection for your cockpit lighting
system. Assuming it will be used primarily at night, bright white lights
will obviously effect your night vision and decrease your SA. The army uses
red at night -- the problem with red is it makes everything red near invisible
:-) It might prove difficult reading various gauges etc...
I don't know what the USAF/Army etc use for cockpit illumination, but it strikes
me, the dull white light in the CJ6 is, for me anyway, prob the way to go.
But what do I know, I'm an army guy :-)

Subject: | CJ rear louvered vent replacement |
Can anyone say that this mod has significantly reduced cockpit smoke (from smoke
system) during high alpha maneuvering?
Just curious?
Thank you.

Subject: | CJ-6 canopy seals |
concerning the fabric seal riveted to the metal retainer strip in the CJ cockpits.
This strip does not seem to be riveted to the underlying canopy / front window
bow. If that is correct how is it properly removed?
Thank you,

Subject: | CJ electric rudder trim |
I had the opportunity to take some really nice photos of a stripped rudder modified
for electric trim at Bill Blackwells a couple years back. Unfortunately,
those photos were lost with a stolen laptop. Would anyone consider sharing their
photos of a rudder trim mod? Specifically, the mounting brackets and any pics
prior to applying fabric. I have plenty of pics of the finished product but
would like to see the guts.
Thanks,
