I dug the glue out of the screw holes and when we got the cover off it was totally burned inside and two melted balls of copper fell out onto the floorboard. Suffice it to say we found the smoking gun. With all the Yak's that have gotten the alternator conversion I figure there's got to be a bunch of these relays out there collecting dust on the shelf (or perhaps riding along as dead weight and still installed on the firewall?). Please advise if you have one available and how much you'd like for it. We sure would appreciate it. They are somewhat rare for some reason. There are actually a number of relays inside that device, which is kind of why it is called "The Combined Device". It has two standard 28 volt relays that are easy to replace, one main current contactor (the big one with the cover on top), and one reverse current relay. It actually CAN be repaired if you know a little bit about electronics. The only relay that would be a real hassle would be the reverse current relay itself. That does not usually fail. So when you are talking about "totally burned out" you might not be as bad off as you thought. Take a hard look at what "melted", and take a picture and post it if you can. If you can find a used one that someone is willing to part with ... GREAT! I suggest you get TWO! :-) If you can't, let me know and I can possibly show you how to put in milspec 28 vdc relays to replace the ones that burned out. My GUESS is that the main contactor relay froze in place, allowing total reverse current to occur, which then melted the thing. That would be about the only thing that would actually cause it to MELT like you are talking about. I am surprised that your main battery fuse did not blow when this happened. There is also a possibility of damage to the main power contactor relay external to this device as well... this is the one that is turned on when you switch the MASTER on. In any case, with that relay REMOVED (be careful of nothing touching ground!) you should be able to turn on your electrical master and have normal battery power. If that does not happen, you have other damage as well... but since you just said the "generator went off-line", you might have gotten very lucky. I highly recommend the B&C SK-35 for replacement, and install is dead easy. If it comes to that.
