Subject: Latest Yak Air System GPA
    From: Rico Jaeger <rijaeger@wausau.k12.wi.us>
(GPA = Giant Pain in the *ss!) OK...to get you back up to speed: my emergency air was opened a couple months ago. Upon resetting the system back to primary, there were one or more significant leaks in the system. Per credible guidance, I pulled all 3 landing gear shuttle valves and discovered the black rubber balls were indeed deformed - thus improperly sealing the valve. I bought shuttle valve kits from Jill and went through the valves. My new dilemma is re-installation. There are 4 "rings" on the shuttle valve outlet that is inserted into the actuator: 2 rubber "O" rings and 2 nylon split rings. When I pulled the valves, they required appreciable force to remove. It stands to figure then that the same would be required for re-installation. My 1st attempt (Starboard main) met w/ considerable resistance. Upon trying to "coax" the valve into place, I noticed the aft nylon split ring beginning to fragment. Removal of the valve showed that the aforementioned ring was indeed now "toast." I removed that ring and re-installed one of the original split rings - which (at least under inspection w/ the Mk. I Eyeball) appeared to be in serviceable condition. I then liberally lubricated the insert point w/ machine oil. This seemed to have absolutely no effect. What I'm wondering is...what is the "hot tip" for re-installation? NOTE: upon working 8 times longer than I'd anticipated inside the (approximately) 8" x 8" access opening to "remove" (WRESTLE WITH!) the valves in the 1st place, I thought it wise to safety wire everything before mounting the valve, IE: I lifted the valve into the maintenance cavity and attached / torqued the air lines, safety-wired as required and THEN attempted to insert the valve outlet into the actuator. (Air lines were carefully positioned to facilitate installation) Is my installment sequence in error? Or is there simply a "trick" I'm missing? Talk to me, guys...THANX! Rico

I have not read this yet Etienne, but if you don't want something discussed, then I would suggest that you not post it on a discussion list. Etienne, Thanks for posting. Was a good read. A lot of insight. Bottom line, as the old adage goes, always try to fly in middle of the boundaries of the atmosphere. Flying to close to the edges begs to flirt with disaster. Always give yourself enough altitude for at least two "Oh Shits".
