    Subject: CJ6 prop reversal
    From: "Okanogan Lew" <vplewis@community.org>
Guys, during my last 5-6 flights, while shutting down the engine, twice it has reversed the direction & has turned 3-4 blades before stopping. Has anyone else had this experience & I wonder what is causing it & if there is damaged being done? I have flown about 60 hrs in this plane & this is the first time this has happened. I do run ethanol free auto fuel with occasional av gas & MMO. My shut down procedure is to run the engine up to 1600 rpm for about 15 secs, bring it to idle & turn off the mags. Should I be bringing the mixture to lean before shutting off the mags? This is a stock 285 HP engine, Thanks for any advice. An important point I forgot, is that I do have the auto spark plug conversion. Paul; Since there is no idle cut-off system in the carb. ignition cut-out is the only method available. This is basically the same process that I recall from the days of C65=99s, etc. but with the advantage at least of a CHT guage. The process I use for the Huosai or the M14P is Fine pitch, 1500 RPM for exactly one minute (time and RPM could vary but should be the same at each shut-down to facilitate oil scavenge and give a reliable basis for measuring oil consumption), Prop lever to coarse pitch, Wait for min. RPM and max. MP, Throttle to idle, Check for CHT below 140 deg.C, Switch off. The Chinese manual adds another action which was standard and absolutely necessary in the C65 days. That is : Throttle slowly to full Open with switch closure. I think your problem is not enough cylinder cooling time. Whether auto plugs would be more prone to after fire I don=99t know. Hope that helps; Walt From: Paul Lewis Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2012 8:11 AM Subject: Re: Yak-List: CJ6 prop reversal An important point I forgot, is that I do have the auto spark plug conversion. Thanks Walt, I pulled a plug (NGK BR5HS) & it looked black, but not oily or sooty. From: Gary Gabbard <ggg6@att.net>
Paul, Gary Gabbard (CJ N22YK) here, I have a suggestion on the kick back pro blem. What is the RPM when you have the throttle closed and the idle stabili zes? If it is a low idle speed you might adjust the idle RPM up a 100 RPM. I have had engines that would kick back on shut down. By adjusting the idle u p a little higher it stopped. Reason is that if the throttle plate in the ca rb. throat is completely closed it will cause fuel to be drawn up the intake by the low pressure in the intake manifold. By adjusting the idle up a bit it leaves the throttle plate a bit open and reduces the suction of fuel up i nto the cyls. No fuel, no kick back. It is worth a try. Let us know how it g oes.
