Subject: | Re: Converting Yak 55 to Cleveland wheels and brakes |
Hi, I bought my yak 55 with Cleveland brakes installed. Had no problem except that
you needed strong legs to hold the beast at full power. A year ago I had a
back operation and don't have those legs anymore. I could not even hold the brakes
at 50% power. It seems the ratio between the master cylinder and the calipers
were not correct. The calipers fitted are similar to a Cherokee 140. I
got hold of a set from a Cherokee that was in a crash and made a new torque plate
to carry one caliper in front and one at the back.
Now the brakes feel normal and I have no problem holding 100% power. The pedal
travel is +/- 15 mm from zero to max.
The calipers the yak came with have 50 mm pistons and the extra ones I fitted are
44 mm.

Brad,
Extracted this from the 20+ pages of YAK-52 pilot's system notes I've written up
so far ... chronographs are good kit, but not simple!
Note there are two variants as per below.
Chronographs
=> -1 = second hand operates with clock, stopwatch sub-dial 60 minutes
=> -1M = second hand operates with stopwatch, stopwatch sub-dial 30 minutes
=> mechanical Chronograph fitted with a heating element for very cold conditions
=> Pitot Heat switch controls the clock heater - although most have been disabled
=> performs a conventional Clock function as well as a Stopwatch and an Hour Recorder
=> outer scale is the main Clock & single sweep second hand
=> upper sub-dial is the Hour Recorder (HR) and the lower sub-dial is the Stopwatch
function
=> two knobs are mounted to the outer bezel;
Left function knob
=> normal position (IN) winds the mechanism
=> pull OUT & rotate hands to set time on Clock
=> push IN to change the setting selection interlink between Clock & Hour Recorder
=> each push moves a flag in the Hour Recorder dial - alternates Red, Red / White
and White
=> corresponds to Set Clock & HR, Set Clock, Stop HR & Set Clock, Reset HR
Right function knob
=> turn counter-clockwise to run mechanism, clockwise to stop
=> push knob to cycle Stopwatch function: Start Stop Reset
Using the Chronograph
=> Right knob turn clockwise - ensure mechanism stopped
=> Left knob - wind mechanism spring until it begins to tighten
=> Left knob - push knob IN until White flag shows, pull OUT to set the correct
time & push back IN
=> Red Flag - the White flag is replaced with Red flag indicating system fully
engaged
# turn Right knob counter-clockwise to run the Clock and the Hour Recorder
# Stopwatch functions (push right knob IN) available
=> Red / White Flag appears on second push IN of Left knob
# Hour Recorder stopped, main clock continues
# Stopwatch functions still available
=> White Flag appears on third push IN of Left knob
# Hour Recorder reset, main clock continues
# Stopwatch functions still available
Hope this helps.
Brgds, Rob R

Subject: | CJ - Prop overhaul |
Good day,
I was just advised by my AME that my prop was up for its 10 year
overhaul. I was a bit disappointed as I has just purchased the plane
last year (from a crate from China) and assumed it was a new prop.
Apparently on IRAN in China, they did replace the prop on retirement,
but that was 2003. I am guessing with the comparatively low price of
a standard CJ-prop, an overhaul is somewhat pointless. My question is
as follows: What do I need to purchase/replace to meet the overhauled
requirement? Any leads on where to get it and approx cost?
Thanks,
Phil Nicholson
