Subject: | Re: yak 55 engine surge, in flight |
Actually the larger chunks of rubber never made it into the finger screen. Only
smaller pieces were in the screen. The larger pieces were lodged in the interior
end of the finger screen orifice where it makes a 90 degree turn. I had
to remove the plate on the outside of the carburetor to gain access to the area
where the larger chunks of rubber were lodged.

We found it in the finger screen in the carb. It is not uncommon to have a
small amount of fuel drip out of the carb after shutdown especially if you do
not advance the throttle to wide open just as you cut the mags off. I am by no
means an expert on the carb.

of the flapper valve, which filter IE...course or fine on the firewall or
in the carb inlet course screen, and was this part of the emergency fuel shut
off flap. In addition, this evening after returning to the hanger and after the
test flight this afternoon have found fuel dripping from and around the spray
bar in the carb venturi. Thanks

Does anyone know where to add weights to the prop or hub when balancing the V530
prop (original Russian) for tricycle Yak 52?
Engine mounts are replaced. Any other items that should be reviewed before balancing?
Thank you

Subject: | Re: V530 prop balance |
The key to getting the Russian paddle prop balanced is how close the weight of
each blade is when removed from the hub. If the weight is more than a couple of
ounces, you will have a bit of difficulty. I would suggest removing the blades
and having them weighed on a precision scale to see what the actualweight
difference is. Then you will know which side of the hub you will have to add
the most weight. (add to the lighter blade side of course). I actually took my
blades to the local post office and had them weighed!
Most of the time the hub and blades are static balanced off the airplane.
Weight plates made especially for the hub are affixed to the large castellated
nuts on the side of the hub with appropriate screws and safety wired once
finished.
Before you begin any balancing, it is important to measure the blade length once
installed in the hub and positioned close to the proper blade angle or at the
center whisker mark on the collar under the counterweight clamp. I measure from
the edge of the cuff under the counterweight clamp out to the tip of the blade.
They should be within 1/8" or so. Next, be absolutely certain the blade angles
are the same to within .1 degree when finished setting the blade angles. Even
a
very small % of a degree difference will cause vibrations that can not be
balanced out.
Lastly, to fine tune the balance, determine the lighter of the two blades and
use spray paint on the back side of the blade, putting light coats from about
mid-way on the blade out to the tip. After each coat (let it dry first), run
the engine and see if the vibration improves. Keep going until it is smooth.
Most of the Russian props vibrate the most between 46 and 54%. Some more, some
maybe less. So find the point where you feel the most vibration and test at
this point after using the "high tech prop balancing spray paint" available only
at your local aircraft spray paint supplier, like Autozone aircraft parts or
National Aircraft Parts Association (NAPA) or Lowes Yak Parts, etc. :-)).

Doug Sapp's CJ maintenance manual is pretty good. Since the CJ and the M9-35
mags are centrifugal advance mags.

Subject: | exhaust pipe TIG welding |
Can anyone help me with what material the exhaust pipes might be on my Yak5
2 tricycle? They appear to be original Russian pipes, they are NOT magneti
c, and dark brown in color.
Inconel?
SST?
I need to cut the pipe, slide on a new nut, and TIG weld back together. In
conel 618 filler? SST 304/309?
Thank you
