I don't know if anyone on the 'list has done any long distance racing but I am
going to give the AirVenture Cup a try this year. All of my race experience has
been in short sprints, which fits the CJ's capability better than a 400NM event.
I have a small aux of 14 gallons, which usually is good for an hour at lower cruise
settings. The other tanks are stock (41 gallons). New this year is a "Heavy
Metal" class for warbirds. The CJ and Yaks are listed as sub-classes. The good
news is that new rules allow a "no penalty" gas stop at designated turn points
for limited range aircraft like mine. The bad news is that I still have to
do a 212.5 NM leg to get to that gas stop.
My strategy is to set prop (M-14P/paddle blade) at 2400rpm, watch the temp gauges
and set the throttle to a 24GPH flow. That should yield 160+ knots with my
stock 360. That's a lot slower that I used to fly with the old engine, but that
one sits in back of the hanger now.
Sooo, is there any benefit to climbing over 3000 AGL over 212 NM while sedately
motoring along??

Hi Craig,What kind of engine is that "old engine" sitting in the back of yo
ur hangar?Robin
P.S. a friend used to own a CJ with M14B (320hp?) running Chinese prop. He
was always faster than other CJ's with 360hp M14P running paddle prop.

My "old" (800 hr) engine was leaking oil through the guides. I pulled it off for
custom OH when I got the chance last year. It was rebuilt in a Siberian OH facility
from a Yak-50 (that's what the Russian logs say). It has polishing and
mild porting on the intake and exhaust. Came off the dyno at 372HP. That was
before I installed Chinese mags which have centrifugal advance. Throw in auto
wiring, electronic ignition on one side, polish the carb and intake plenum, etc,
and it turned out to be a powerful runner.
With after-market pistons, rings, valves and the like, it should be solid.
