Just saw a Yak 52TW out in Cody, Wy. with a vortex kit on it. Owner said
it made a "good deal of difference". The Clark Y airfoil is the same on
all the Yaks, so you shouldn't have a problem figuring the proper placement.

No, no details. Vortex generators have been around a long time and their
benefits are well know. And except for making the wing harder to clean or
polish and snagging your cloths on, do have a marked effect on stall and
control effeteness at or near stall angles of attack.
I'd put them on my CJ-6 (I believe some guys have) but I simply don't need
them. I just don't fly that part of the envelope often enough, plus I
like the "quaintness" of a vintage warbird. Just me.

Hi,
Just bought an 52. Previous Owner has allready lightning it pretty
mutch.
Now has empty weigh on 915kg. Intension is to make it more light around
880
kg. Engine will be upgraded to 400+HP. The Aircraft has to be prepaired
for
short take off and landing fields.
Any suggestions on best proppel to use? cruisespeed not importent, climb
rate most importent.
Also would like to now if any has experience on wortex kit on Yak 52,
benefits on stall speed etc..?
The rebuild will be possible to follow onwww.yaknorway.com

In that case I would recommend them. They should not change the ability to d
o any of the acrobatic maneuvers but they will improve the feel and control a
t low speed. They don't appear to effect the high speed part of flight. On
the early jets (i.e. B-707) they actually were used just in front of the 'h
igh speed' or inboard ailerons to increase their effectiveness in the speeds
near Mach where the air flow separation was happening at the rear of the co
rd. And that is what they do even on the likes of Cubs where the owners are
looking for super lift. A "VG" delays the flow separation on just about an
y wing. It is important that they be put in the right place for the airfoil
being used. The nice thing is that most can be glued on - nice for easy in
stallation and again nice because of the importance of accuracy of placement
.
I've seen them on just about every airplane, including Bonanzas which has th
e same airfoil as the CJ-6. BTW the Yak driver out in Cody said he put them
on because of the high density altitudes he had to operate at. That is som
ething you might need to also consider on those long hot summer days in Norw
ay. ;-)

I agree with Pete. While the 530 is an "OK" basic prop, the later design Wh

It's 210m, 690 feet! So it's short!
Downhill slope both ends so in and out is good.

Rub it in:-) long hot summer days, not mutch of that:-)
Thanks for info,
The field is 600feet ASL, and more cold then warm days I can tell:-) So that
is ok. Some benefits we have here!
Any suggestions were to buy a VG kit?

On the early jets (i.e. B-707) they actually were used just in front of th
e 'high speed' or inboard ailerons to increase their effectiveness in the sp
eeds near Mach where the air flow separation was happening at the rear of th
e cord. And that is what they do even on the likes of Cubs where the owners
are looking for super lift. A "VG" delays the flow separation on just abou
t any wing. It is important that they be put in the right place for the air
foil being used. The nice thing is that most can be glued on - nice for eas
y installation and again nice because of the importance of accuracy of place
ment.

mething you might need to also consider on those long hot summer days in Nor
way. ;-)

I am considering a replacement for the Balkin-5 radio in my Yak 52. No
urgency; it's still working OK. If I do replace it, I'd like to install the
radio (or control head) in the same location as the existing radio's control
head, not in a central console between my legs. I am also considering
installing a second, remote control head in the rear cockpit. I've looked
at radios like those from MGL, X-Com, Becker, Dittel, Microair and Trig.
All have quite small footprints. Does anyone have a similar installation or
experience with any of these radios? Or does anyone have any suggestions
they'd care to make?

OK guys, I know this is going to sound silly, but remember I'm an old guy
and us old guys tend to have this happen every once in a while.
Question. Who am I rooming with at OSH? Over a month ago ?????? called and
emailed me about sharing a house at OSH. It sounded good - so I said yes.
Well I can't remember who.
Now be gentle with my psyche but would that good person contact me.

Just a few thoughts....
Microair is made in Australia and sometimes has to go there for repairs
..... which can take awhile.
I would avoid the Becker radios. Originally designed for glider use,
they are not very well shielded and can become problematic when exposed
to broadband noise, such as will happen when using something like the
P-1000 digital tach (connects to the P leads of the mags), as well as
replacing the stock ignition harness with Dennis's auto conversion kit.
Replacement of the stock ignition harness is a very good thing, and the
engine runs MUCH better, but it does raise the noise floor just
slightly. Most radios will continue to plug along very well even with
this happening, but the Becker sometimes chokes on it.
I am sure those who use the Becker successfully might object to my
comment here, but I've experienced this problem with this radio quite a
few times.

I had the Becker compact in my 50, and afterwards moved that same radio to
a Yak 52 (which has Dennis' automotive plug kit).
In that 52 there's also a PM1200 intercom (excellent!!!).
Until now, no problems, but of course you have a point Mark.
These compact radios are not designed for rugged, noisy planes like the
Yak.
I did have a lot of trouble with XCOM radios on the Yak 52.
The XCOM has a remarkably strong end amplification, but is also very
sensitive to bad antenna connectors or antenna cables.
I now have an 8.33 kHz separated Funkwerk ATR833 in my Yak 50.
Seems to be VERY good, although it's also one of those compact things,
specifically designed for gliders.
On both planes (the Yak 50 and the Yak 52) I've installed a Garrecht mode
S transponder.
One thing is certain: a sloppy installation ruins the best equipment.

You might check with Kregg Victory. He made a very light 52. As I recall he
removed all original wiring, electrical equipment and instruments and
installed Dynon stuff in the front and only an airspeed, altimeter and T&B
in the rear. Light weight alternator etc. You have to watch the CG carefully
when you make these kinds of modificatios.

Has any one found a solid state voltage regulator that will work with the generator
on the Housai 285hp engine? Up here in Canada we are stuck by regs to continue
using the generator. So, an alternator is not really an option.
My mechanical regulator has packed it in and Doug no longer has replacements.
Can someone confirm that the generator is a type B.
Thanks for the help.

Check with Zeftronics in Texas, some time back they had regulator for both A
and B generator. 800-362-8985 or zeftronics.com. The type A model part
number is G2XXPN, which is used on 25, 40 or 50 amp Delco-Remy. At time I
was interested the price was ~$200.

Subject: | Re: Performance Yak 52 |
The main reason for testing out this is that for The last 5 years I have bee
n in a "war" with neigbours and The goverment for creating a safe landing fi
eld of 2000'! It seems like I am losing that battle and have to use The 690'
field! So then The big question is if we settle down with flying Super Cub o
r find Solutions for The Yak. Since I gone rebuild this Yak pretty mutch aft
er it suffered a hangar roof collapse it might be intresting to find out wha
t can be done with a 52!

Arresting gear is the shipboard system of cross deck pennants (wires)
and arresting gear engines that wayward Naval Aviators attempt to snag
with their tailhook while attempting to return to their perch.

Well, maybe its not possible! But Take off, no problem! Landing
may be a problem! Offcourse this will be tested on other airfield before
on my own field. Not so stupid that I am testing it out on this field!!
How long do you mean its requiered then? 800? 1000? 2000?? Nothing is
imposible! Just The mather of finding correct Solutions:-)

Everything you want has already been done to the TW. I would never try to fly
mine off 700 ft. And expect to keep from the insurance company.

1.3.4. T-O run at 120 k/m takeoff speed:

1.3.5. Landing Run at 115 km/h contact speed:

Did I see in an earlier post that said the length of your runway was 690 feet with
an upslope and a down slope at either end?
Don't think take off is going to be a problem. That even with assuming that your
take off runs will be extended at first because of the uphill run to the crest
of your runway depending the grade. Landings...well maybe you may want to make
that runway more like 1500 feet at a minimum so you can have a margin of
error.
Just my two cents.

Yes forgot that one! With a little aft bulk head strengthening the tail hook should
work.

Dale,
Please explain. You have a tail hook and arresting gear already installed on your
52 TW?
If so please post pictures. I am sure there are a few ol Naval aviators lurking
on this list that would really love to see the mechanics of your arrangement.
It bring back days of glory when they all sought the "3 wire" on their crash
landings on the decks of their "boats".
We AF pukes on requested the "cable" when we had a hydualic system failure. Twice
in my long and illustrious life was I in the "barrier".
Yes, Dale, I do believe the Naval crash landers on the list can help with this
issue.
