Hi Steve,
sorry, but I cannot see the logic when you stated that the engine sounded OK on
one mag and not so on the second when later you diagnosed air leaks in the intake
pipes. Suspecting some other cause Id love to learn what may be behind this
logic ?
Cheers
Vic

I think it has to do with an overly lean mixture and the flame fronts in the
cylinder. Apparently one spark plug is not enough to adequately ignite the
over lean mixture.

Are the boots the same for the control stick, the flap cylinder and the
nose cylinder?

I finally gave up and made my own. I still had my notes, so I made a
drawing and am attaching it along with the original Inkscape file. When
you unfold your old boots you'll be surprised how much material goes
into them.
When printing the PDF be sure to click "Actual size" and not any kind
of "fit" or "shrink" option. On 11x17" paper the drawing is 1:1 scale.
Fabric stores have a section with slightly thinner canvas for outdoor
furniture which works nicely for the boots.
Also get a little scrap of leather about 15mm wide by 500mm long and
cut it into 4 equal parts to make a cuff band around the top of the
boot.
Ironing after each fold makes things a LOT easier. It's pretty easy
but meticulous work... it took me a couple of nights at the kitchen
table to make all 4.
They come out looking like there's no way they'll come together in the
right way to make a nice boot, but they do.
Make sure you get washers to go with the rivets to clamp the material
well. I used a drill to make the holes... can't say that was the best
way to do it. A punch would be better, and you can probably use the
same punch for the eyelets. Eyelets can be found at the fabric store.
Good luck!
Jon

I am look for a set of the cloth boots for the control sticks in my
CJ. Does anyone sell them pre-made? I checked with Doug and he doesn't
have any. Thanks Kelley

It does work that way thought I can't explain it.
If you have EGT for each cylinder, go out and do a mag check on each mag
with the intake drain open. You'll see certain (I don't remember which)
cylinders not completely fire. If you do the same test with the primer open
(tilted to the side), you'll see cylinder 9 go bad.

Well, I was believing the engine did quite OK on the "good" mag and sputtered on
the bad, assuming, the good mag fired just one spark per pot and the other mag
was earthed. So this would not help with the phenomenon.

Yes, we have several at DVT. Start is the same.

Anyone with high compression pistons in an M14P with the Russian air start
system: does the air start handle the higher compression with any added
difficulty? Is the start procedure any different? Any other comments on the
pros and cons of high compression pistons welcome!

Maybe nit-picking, but a comment if I may: The subject line is "High Compression
Pistons". It really should read: "Slightly Higher Compression Pistons".
:-)
So.... Kind of a misnomer. The pistons being discussed are only slightly higher
compression, not HIGH compression. I am sure Jill can give the exact value,
but it is only going from about 7 to 8 on the compression ratio. Above 8 is
not recommended on any blown engine, and even 8 is pushing it just a tad by racing
engine standards anyway. That said, the M-14P does not push a huge amount
of blower boost like you would find on a drag engine, or even something like
a GSO-480.
In any case, that's why going from 7 to 8 does not really impact any starting effort.
It's just not a huge change.
Real "High Compression" pistons are usually above 10 to 1 and are never found in
a blown engine. What really should attract anyone regarding these pistons is
not just the small compression change, but the quality of the material. Especially
the aluminum pistons themselves, their expansion specs as compared to
the Russian material, along with the piston ring designs. All substantial improvements,
resulting in more power, lower oil consumption, better longevity, etc.
