Hi Robin;
Very strange!
I don=99t believe the prop is the culprit.
The prop blade partially shown in the photo shows no evidence of grease
(or oil) leakage. Oil leakage from the prop has to originate in the
pitch change area, usually one or both of the piston/cylinder seals or
from the transfer tube gasket in the crankshaft. A leaking inner seal
or tube gasket will leak into the hub and out past the blade grease
seals. Both of those and a leaking outer seal will also leak from the
front of the hub and transfer oil to the blades.
This leak is originating behind the prop. The most likely source is
the crankshaft thrust bearing. Unlike horizontally opposed engines
there is no seal or gasket to prevent thrust bearing lube oil from
leaking out. In most radials (though I do not know for sure how the
Huosai does it) there is a simple slinger ring between the inner race of
the bearing and the bearing thrust nut on the crankshaft. This collects
the bearing oil and =9Cslings=9D it back into the nose case.
The usually reason for leakage from that location is pressure in the
case due to a blocked vent.
Not good at reading tea leaves so the above is just a wild assed guess
(WAG).
Good luck;
Walt

When was the last time the seals in the prop hub piston were replaced? If n
ot from there, check the prop shaft seal. First guess is the hub piston inne
r and outer seals.

Thanks Walt,
It's very hard to see looking directly at the area but I do see what you mean looking
at the detail in volume 1. My though is that without removing the front
windscreen or center section (for the rear seal). I'd have to use a cherrymax
rivet to reinstall?
My seals are dried out and rock hard.

Subject: | looking for help with "mushy" brakes on CJ |
My brakes started to feel progressively mushy starting about 50 hours ago. Just
checked the drums and they looked fine and the pucks did not show much wear
at all (pucks and drums have around 200 hours on them ). I find that I'm pulling
the brake handle right up to the stick. I have some room to adjust the cable
on the front stick. Is there anything else I should be looking at? Steering
is normal, brake handle just doesn't seem crisp.
brakes just barely hold for prop check on run-up.

Probably a seal in the prop. Either the oil tube seal or the seal on the rim
of the piston if the CJ hub is built Ike the YAKs.

Subject: | Re: CJ canopy seal |
Hi Keith;
I gave you a bit of a bum steer by referring to "tubing sections". Those
are only in the sliders, not the fixed sections. But I think you found my
error OK.
Rather than tubing the fixed section bows are formed aluminum alloy frames
riveted to the upper longerons. The part that the seal and retaining strip
are riveted to is the external surround that holds the Plexiglas in place
and is bolted to the frame with flush head screws. I think you will have
to remove this to replace the seal. There is very little room between this
and the aft face of the frame making it very difficult to drill out the
existing rivets. Cherry Max rivets will likely not be an option as there
is not enough space for the rivet stem. If you are able to get the old
rivets out without damaging the very soft retaining strip it may be possible
to use short 3/32" POP rivets.
However, you can remove the surround without removing the windshield or
center section glass though you would have to re-seal the glass on
re-installation.
Sorry for the misinformation.
Walt

Keith,
The braded steel cable stretches over time - this is the reason it is
getting closer and closer to the stick. If not mistaken (I did it a few
years ago), you can shorten the cable by adjusting the retaining nut in
front side of the stick column...
At some point you may want to replace with a braded stainless steel cable.
