    From: "airmanv2" <bruno.blanchard2@gmail.com>
Hi every Body, I'm a (the) new french owner of a Uk reg. CJ6A based LFAO. I have question regarding the start up procedure. At his time I was told to pull 9 blades, prime 4 strokes, manual pomp 6 times. Pressure in the air tank at 40 Kg, propeller turn slowly and some time i do not succeed to start. So I pull again 9 blades, 4 strokes an 4 manual pomp again and some time its fine , some time not. Some time a third try and if not start I have a to low air pressure and must refile the air tank . Question: is that the correct method to practice? Question? I saw that the primer can be turn right or left but I don't now the reason and how it must be used? thanks for help Bruno -------- Fly safe Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=414766#414766

I noticed when I went to their web site yesterday that they have come out with a new model line, and I did not take the time to study each model number. You're looking for a 24 vdc 4 amp model (they make an 8 amp model, but personally I would not go that route) that is made for AGM type batteries (assuming that is what you are using). The very best advice I can give you would be to call them up, tell them exactly what batteries you are using, and let them make recommendations on their new product line. two years ago I called Battery Minder and they built me a Optima 4amp AGM , 24 v Battery Minder out of a off the shelf version and relabeled it . It charges the batteries to 13.64 volts or around there where it needs to be. The last 1.5 volts are where the battery has most of its power if not charged all the way. Subject: Re: CJ6 Primer left /Right and manual pomp
Bruno. The primer is pretty simple. It does not matter which way it turns when fully down, as long as it locks down. If you have pulled it up to prime, when you push it down, you must turn it 90 degrees (in either direction) in order for it to close and lock. If you do not turn it 90 degrees, the primer will let a lot of fuel flow though, and flood #9 cylinder which at lower power settings causes the engine to run rough. I've seen two occasions where the valve in the bottom of the primer has screwed up, causing the engine to run rough, thus needing to replace the primer. (Simple job) Your starting procedure sound OK for the most part. Pulling the prop though 9 times really is only making sure you do not have a hydraulic lock in the bottom cylinders. Having one could (most likely WILL) cause you to bend a connecting rod, which will lead to a engine failure. Promise. I have over 2,000 hours with the M-14 and Hs6a engines in my log. I don't use the procedure the Chinese call for in the book, except on a cold day. I've found that priming 4 to 6 times, than pumping the wobble pump until I see the fuel pressure gage rise, is enough for the HS6. On the M-14p all I do is pull the prop though checking for a hydraulic lock, climb in the cockpit, prime 4 times (on a cold day 6), hold the pre-oil switch until I get oil pressure on the gage, and hit the starter button. 3 blades and she's running. On the HS6 engine you can turn the mags on first, before pushing the starter button. (Not a good idea on the M-14p). Some times you will get a "kick or two" during the start. Be prepared to pump the primer once or twice or even three times, to try and catch it. If you do this, make sure you close and lock the primer after the engine is running. (BTW you can run the engine just by pumping the primer - knowing that has saved my ass.) You can "flood" (to much fuel) these engines. If you think you have flood one, simply during start while still pushing the start button, open the throttle all the way. BE READY TO CLOSE IT IF THE ENGINE STARTS!! Doing this - leans out the mixture for a start. Some times the "buzz box" "Shower of Sparks" or 'Exciter" might be weak or inop. This can make the engine hard to start. If you press the start button and hear a healthy buzz up front, its mostly likely working. Your air pressure sounds a little low but is more than enough. These engines can be hand started easily. So I don't believe 40 atmospheres is not your problem. Hope this helps. Good luck. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby In a message dated 12/3/2013 6:43:01 A.M. Hi Bruno, I use (when cold): Pull through 9 blades. This way I know if I have an issue before introducing fuel. Prime 6 shots Pull through 6 blades Prime 2 - 4 shots, leaving the primer up Pump until fuel pressure shows good with throttle closed. Throttle cracked Start - if it hasn't run for a long time, it will take me twice with the above, also prime while starting, or pumping the throttle (accelerator pump) works same. As far as primer open left or right, it doesn't matter, it is just to get it unlocked.
