Hi, Guys
Since my Yak had been dormant since October, I wasn't particularly alarmed
when preparing for the first fire-up of the year I noticed the emergency ai
r bottle had drained as empty as the main bottle. Although I didn't recall
that happening last year, I figured it just all bled off from being down so
long. But now both bottles are nearly depleted after just a couple days wh
en I refill. Obviously there's a major leak somewhere. What I'm more intere
sted in is why is my emergency air venting? When the main bottle emptied in
the past the emergency bottle always remained at 100%. Does that mean a sh
uttle valve is mispositioned? Leaking emergency valve? I went through all 3
shuttle valves and actuators last year as well as the "equalizing valve" i
n the rear floor. The system was pretty tight when I parked it last Fall. T
here is no audible hiss - and my airport gets pretty quiet at times. Still
battling compressor issues, but....one thing at a time I guess. Anyone who'
s "been there" and is willing to share would be most appreciated.
Thanks!!

Check for a leak coming out of the external air fill port after you refill the
bottles. It very well could be some crud inside the main and emergency check valves
causing them not to close properly.

Subject: | leaking main bottle and emergency bottle on Yak |
I've had both. First time it was the main bottle and it was leaking out the fill
port via the check valve on the firewall. Removed the check valve cleaned
and removed the old hard seal and replaced with a new O-ring and fixed that.
It's been good for 15 years since. Recently my Emergency tank also began to not
hold pressure. I noticed when removing the the pneumatic fill valve cover on
the side of the fuselage the tell tale pssst of air coming out. Normally there
should be no air escaping here. Since the Main tank was holding pressure just
fine, I knew the leak was coming from the emergency tank fill check valve just
beside the fill port. Follow the tubing back from your emergency tank to the
fill port and you will find the check valve. Very easy access from the rear
cockpit. I took mine apart, and cleaned it. It has a spring and a small square
piston with a donut shaped rubber seal on it's face. I soaked mine in STP
Oil Treatment for rejuvenating seals, for a day, put it back together and it
sealed up tight with no leak. In my case the Main tank leak was from the firewall
mounted main system fill, check valve, and the Emergency tank was bleeding
down through the emergency system fill check valve on the left side of the
fuselage behind the rear seat. I also changed out my main system bottle with
a 6000 psi kevlar wrapped aluminum O2 cylinder left over from a trip up Everest.
It has a shutoff valve at the tank and I no longer suffer from a bled down
main tank. Just DON'T forget to turn it, and the Main system valve, ON before
you get in the cockpit. Checklist, first item!
