The problem with the 54 is that the Russians found incipient cracks on two
very hard-flown 54 which were being used by the Russian Advanced Team. In
consequence Yakovlev issued a series of SBs which involved the complete
replacement of the wing and tail mountings. These are complex, since the
mountings are circular fabrications inserted inside the monocoque fuselage.
The 54 is still in slow production at the state Arsenyev factory in the
Russian far East, but it is very difficult to get these modification kits,
and the best my knowledge only a couple have been delivered.
In Europe, Termikas in Lithuania are the only people who are authorised to
conduct the modifications.
So, in order to fly the 54 in Europe, these SBs must be complied with, since
the 54 has EASA certification, albeit in a "restricted" category although in
most other parts of the world like USA; Australia, they can fly without, and
my personal view is that if they are flown within their design limits, and
subject to a detailed inspection of these mountings annually, the compliance
is not so important.
