modern alternative and keep them in the same housings?

We have just had an interesting problem which I believe deserves a wider
audience. It concerns a European Sukhoi, but since the oil system is
basically the same as on 50/52/54/55 Yaks, it is totally relevant.
For Sukhois, the recommended oil level for aerobatics is 10 L, but our
customer found that when filled to 10 L, he would always lose at least 2 L
during an aerobatic session, bringing the level down to what he thought
could be a worrying level. By chance, however, when filling his oil tank
after changing the oil, he found that he had put in just over 12 L when the
dipstick registered 10 L.
We then checked his dipstick with two other Sukhoi 29s, only to find that it
had a different scale, and consistently registered 2 litres less than was in
the tank, so the owner was always overfilling the tank!
I wonder how many other owners have ever checked how accurate their
dipsticks might be!

you're right Richard!
I noticed that if I put more than 8,5 liters oil before aerobatics, Oil
will spit everytimes out... could you tell us the lengh of the different
dipsticks? From the top to the 10liters mark?

Never checked it accurately but will do so soon.
What I have found though in the last 10 years is the following:
I always fill up the oil tank of my Yak52 between 8 and 9 litres before an
aerobatic sortie. When checking the level when back on the ground I have
always lost about 1 tot 1,5 litres of oil. I remember from my conversion
training in Lithuania that the advise was for an aerobatic sortie not to
fill up the oil tank beyond 8 litres. The statement was: =B3She will throw ou

I=B9ll try to check the dip stick on how accurate it is...

I performed my first flight in the new CJ today, and all is well :) A few
things I need to address though. The brake is quite stiff, and it feels
like the cable is binding. Whats the length I need to purchase. Any
particular brand I should buy, or avoid? I've never replaced one, what kind
of job is it?

Hello Hans,
A 52 really should not throw oil out below 7 L, and ideally not below 8 L.
However, the oil system is very good and will tend to pick up oil in most
any attitude, even if it is somewhat low.
But it was interesting to find a dipstick reading a little more than 2 L
out!

I have a Yak18T F-HYAK and unfortunately I broke the lens of the gear strut
light.
So now I am looking for a lens for the gear strut light lens and it seems
that WLAC doesn't have any.
Anyone know where I can find one.
I am also looking for LED replacement for the gear strut light bulb

We have seen some owners fill the tanks to 12 liters (or More) and
not realize that at that oil level, it can obscure the vent on the opposite
side of the oil pick up in the tank. This crates pressure in the engine and
it will use prodigious quantities of oil. They then usually think there is a
problem and refill it to 12 liters and repeat the process. I personally
never filled them above the 8 liter mark, even on a cross country flight of
4 house duration (Yak52W or TW). I have seen this tendency in Lycoming's
and Continentals. Because the oil dip stick has a 6 or 8 quart mark on it,
many pilots feel it is necessary to fill it. I have had to put placards on
my rental C150's not to fill above 4 quarts.
