hello,
The workshop "Vintage Aero" at Pent Farm had installed for me the automotive plug
provided by Dennis Savarese. To do that they had to request for a mod at the
CAA-UK. It was the first Automotive Kit plug installed on a uk registered CJ6.
Work is done and engine run fine. Very good job.
My questions are: if i have an engine problem and need a new one to replace it
, it will be quite impossible to find a Housai 285HP with low time or just overhaul.
It will be probably more easy and not more expensive to replace it by a M14 360HP.
(engine+Prop+exhaust) ?
Is some body know if there is an M14 engine on the other UK registered CJ6?
If the exchange was made in UK, did a Mod was requested to the CAA-UK? Kind regards
Bruno

Good work with the plug kit, that's a first for UK Changs, though I'm not sure
how much improvement it will make over a good stock system. Maybe cleaner starts
but and less fouling, but not more hp.
There are no MP14 powered CJ6's on the UK register (fairly confident of that) so
would be interested to see how you get on if you plan to convert. Does your
engine need an overhaul?
Whats the benefit of fitting the stock mp14 engine?

Subject: | harmonic vibration new prop Yak 55m |
Hello all. I've just fitted a set of Whirlwind W530 composite scimitar blades to
my Yak55m. Both blades are in 7 turns on the original hub, and set the same
pitch. They're about 1mm different from hub to tip. The engineer removed all the
balance weights and are running without a dynamic balance.
I have a harmonic vibration between 80%-99%, a beat frequency if you like.
This seems to indicate both a prop and engine vibration. It's worst at 90-99% at
low power setting such as on approach decent.
Should I be worried about the engine possibly having issues, or just dynamically
balance the prop?
Cheers Steve.

Try dynamically balancing the prop first. That usually cures a lot of
problems.

Bruno & Harv,
For us guys here in the US the auto plugs and the harness are MUCH better.
Auto plugs are a whole lot cheaper and easier to find. They make no
different in horse power. I've found that they can foul up but no more than
the regular ones.
I had a 260hp HS-6 when first got my CJ. My rate of climb was 833 ft/m.
I put in the M14 and it went to 2,500 ft/m. Cruise went up about 7 kts but
of course she was burning more. The real advantage is rate of climb and a
lot more vertical in acro.
I really don't envy you UK guys and the restrictive rules you have over
there.

Where on the hub are you making the measurement? Try making the
measurement from the lip under the counterweight clamp to the same point
on both blades. Next, recheck the blade angles. Also make absolutely
certain the counterweight clamps are perfectly flush against lip under
the clamp all the way around. Evena fraction of a mmoff from the lip
under the counterweight will cause an imbalance. If all checks good,
them do a dynamic balance.

Steve;
Does the 1 mm represent the blade track? If so that is within limit.
Track is the difference between each blade tip passing a fixed point during
rotation.
As Dennis noted make sure the counterweight clamps are positioned as far
outboard as possible.
When you say "the engineer removed all the balance weights" are you
referring ONLY to the dynamic balance correction attached to the spinner
back-plate? That would be the correct action if you were sending a prop in
for overhaul or blade replacement. If he has removed ALL balance weight,
including that attached to the hub, you do have a problem.
In the first case a dynamic balance is in order.
In the second the prop needs to go to an overhaul facility for static
balancing. This is done and corrected in both the horizontal and vertical
planes. Dynamic balance should then be done to correct any engine/prop
imbalance.
One other item that may be a factor is the difference between blade angle
settings. This must not exceed 0.1 deg. I would expect info on this with
the blades from Whirlwind.

I've replaced the tubes in the compass amplifier, but I can't remember
now what the equivalents were. The tube base says 6x6 and 6k8 but a
google search finds nothing easily found for the 6x6. Underneath is it
says 6 (2 k's back to back) 6c I'm not sure if that back to back k
symbol is meant to be translated as a K.
Any help would be appreciated.
I know I an just buy the whole amp, but I've seen this symptom before
where the needle just goes round and round, and tube replacement fixed
it.

Subject: | CJ-6 Generator Query |
Hi all.
I have a CJ here that when running the generator warning light will not
come on when the RPM is reduced. Normally comes on at @ 1000 RPM.
Occasionally cycling it will get it operating normally but more often than
not it will not go off line.
Light comes on when engine is shut down.
Any tips or advice here? Is it a matter of giving the regulator a birthday
or similar?

Not sure if it's applicable to CJ=99s, but in older cars with voltag
e
regulators, lightly filing the contact points would stop the sticking.

Subject: | Re: Pressure Problem |
Paul,
The attached graph image is from the AK50 schematic poster that may be of some
help to you.
Note :
- the graph is to fill an 8 litre bottle, on a YAK-52 the main bottle is 11 litres
- the RPM quoted "may" be related to the compressor speed, which is 0.9 engine
speed (I think)
If you've no obvious leak then it's worth a quick check of the compressor outlet
non-return valve. If this is leaking then the charge performance gets reduced
and as the compressor cools post shutdown air trapped in the pipes & "snot pot"
downstream of the pressure regulator valve gets bled back into the engine
crank case and out the breather vent.
Easy way to find out is to check whether the "snot" valve loses back pressure soon
after shutting down. Also try putting a rubber glove over the breather vent
just after shutdown, if it starts to inflate then that's where your air has
gone!
Now this may not be your problem, but at least it's an easy way to eliminate one
candidate.
Hope this helps.
Brgds, Rob R

Sounds more like a bypass relay than generator not dropping off line at preset
RPM. Don't know much about the CJ electrical system. The YAK has a lovely device
that 99% of the time is bullet proof that bypasses the generator flipping the
system over to the BAT SYS when the RPM drops below 40%. When it went TU, it
took the help of Mark And Dennis to sort out.
Good Luck Mate!
