Geez=2C Jim...I am a little speechless. But only in the very best way. Your
kindness is both rare and highly-valued to a guy whom has spent the majori
ty of his life looking-in from the outside.
I enjoy writing. Heck=2C I enjoy communication- especially when it's in reg
ard to a shared passion. When my friends were out for football and in shop
class learning the things I wish I had=2C I was sawing away in orchestra=2C
choir and music theory. But my loyalties always ran deep - witnessed by my
1st car. I wanted a 350 Rocket-powered Firebird for sale on the next block
. My Dad took one look at it=2C heard the angels singing and promptly steer
ed me instead over to a friend's used car lot where he "assisted" me in ran
domly buying a '76 Plymouth Fury - an ex-state trooper car. I learned a lo
t about wrenching on that heap. And it would start on those ice-cold Wiscon
sin Winter days when none of my sib's cars would. Soon=2C my love of Mopars
grew into racing. Always on a shoestring budget=2C my circle track car loo
ked like a discarded potato chip bag on 4 used-to-be chrome rims. I will ne
ver forget trying to hand-stencil sponsors on the accordian'd fenders. Afte
r that I tried my hand at drag racing=2C but the beloved "Mopes" were alway
s a lot like R-4360's...lots of brute power on tap that suddenly just...sto
pped working for some reason. I started flying lessons after burying the sa
d remains of a beautiful RC Corsair that flew spectacularly...right into th
e side of a van parked on the side of the field. I found the "real thing" M
UCH more approachable than being glued to the ground w/ a joystick in my ha
nd constantly trying to figure out if it was time to reverse my control inp
uts. (I don't know how you RC guys do it!?) And that is how my life has gon
e right up until today...trade this / sell that / wheel & deal and VOILA! T
here is now a fire-breathing Russian stead parked in hangar 21! The guys th
at said it would never fly again only fanned the flames of determination to
ensure that it WOULD. And even though I have the crapiest car on the tarma
c...I still fly a YAK! It seems every week I am humbled by the knowledge so
casually exchanged on this site. My musically-formed mind envies the engin
eering-brainiacs out there who see the "obvious" answers that so successful
ly elude me. But my love of music is all I REALLY know - and it's all I hav
e left of my Pop these days. He woulda' loved this big=2C oily noise-maker.
In fact...I'm sure he does.
Thanks=2C Jim. It meant a lot.

You are quite quotable. Even your most recent one liner about never havin
g what you want but having more than you will ever need etc (a la Rolling S
tones). Even proudly having your venerable Cessna 150 in your signature li
ne. I love it. Is it just me?
You might well know that the majority of us Red Star guys are just like you
. Not overly wealthy but with enough drive and incentive to live the drea
m of owning a radial-powered swarthy airplane of our dreams. And not prete
ntious enough to care what others may think of our humble airplane backgrou
nds. Well=2C except for a few old sore heads and type "A" personalities.
Ha. You have well earned your your round-engined oil spewing Walter Mit
ty mount along with the rest of us who persevered. It truly does mean a lo
t more to the likes of us than a 19 year old prick kid of a Texas oil magna
te with a silver spoon in his mouth and a P51 to fly. I actually feel sorr
y for the sod not having the experience of working his way up through the t
raditional singles and trainers to a lifetime dream goal. No envy of that
here. Just hopes he can experience the same satisfaction of obtaining a s
eemingly impossible dream through perseverance. Sooner than later.
Don't ever change. I am damned proud to call you Red Star brethren. You
r welcome at our "down to earth" campfire anytime. Flying in flip flops and
=2C "Smoke on".
